92-96 f-150 e4od question?
On a manual tranny, you should downshift it when the rpms and vehicle speed start to drop off so you don't lug the engine pulling the hill.
On non-electronic auto trannies, they will down shift when the gas pedal is pressed down far enough trying to pull the hill that the kickdown mech is tripped.
If your auto tranny is hunting between gears going up hill, you should lock out the overdrive or shift it down manually, as gear hunting creates heat and can lead to transmission failure.
Pulling hills in too high a gear with the engine lugging and the gas pedal on the floor wastes gas and is not good for the engine or transmission. You will get up the hill faster in a lower gear with the engine operating in it's powerband at part throttle.
In a truck with a healthy engine and transmission, too much downshifting on hills that are not that steep can be caused in part by a truck that has too high (numerically low) an axle ratio for the weight/load of the truck or the diameter of the tires.
