Has anyone gutted their converter and passed a emmision test? Does a cat actually do that much on a 6.0?
I want to delete it but I dont want to deal with replacing it when emmisions are due.
Removal of the Cat hasn't been shown to do much to improve performance. Conversely, leaving the Cat in isn't hurting performance much if at all.
I don't know if any states are currently requiring smog testing for diesels. California will in 2007 but I haven't heard that this will be inflicted upon pre-2007 trucks.
If you want rid of the cat, but are worried about it, all you need to do is split the cat down the middle with a plasma cutter, remove the internal mesh, cut off the ends of the cat to fit whatever diameter exhaust you have, slip it over the straigth pipe in the center, reweld the halfs together, and weld it to the pipe

But Cali doesn't actually test diesels. I just moved from Socal in July. Apparently New York Bureaucrats and Polyticians have there heads up there ***** and are smelling their own methane.
There are a few places out there that are testing diesels, mostly for particulates. Its my understanding (& I may have it wrong), that the cats are there because the egr intoduces oil back into the exhaust stream, creating a sooty condition. When the cat heats up, it gets hot enough to burn off this soot.
Just remember, it is a violation of federal law to modify an installed emissions control system. And its just going to get stiffer, & more comlicated in 07. (Try a rechargable Nitrous Oxide scrubber).

Unless I've been asleep for a very long time, California does not require smog testing on diesels. Of course, there is a considerable movement towards that, with particular efforts directed to ranch equipment -- but not yet.
Colorado does have emissions test on diesels. It cost ~$45.00 per year, they put your vehicle on a dyno and do a low speed and high speed run. It's kind of neat, it will give the rear wheel horsepower after the runs. Sorry I can't give you any more info on the particulars. I now register mine as a farm vehicle which makes it exempt.
