I remember some commercial of a guy in a leather jacket sitting in a lounge chair in front of a radio. I pretty sure that was BASF. Mind you that was the 80's and I don't want to remember too much of that.

Odd that you mention this. It was Maxell, and I am pretty sure it dated from the late 70's. I have a poster of that scene, dating from my college days (it was a freebie). I just came across it when I moved the couch to replace the living room floor a couple of weeks ago. It was rather **koff, koff** dusty **koff, koff**
BASF also makes automotive paints, or did at one time.
They were my go kart sponsor for about 7 years. This year being the first that they are not due to miscommunications. My dad is a automotive painter and he used to use their paint.
I used to work for BASF's Magnetics division as Senior Process Engineer. I was responsible for Audio and Video tape at their factory in Massachusetts, and I was involved in 1/2" computer tape, too. The plant was closed in 1992 in a consolidation move. By the time it closed, retail audio tape was dying, and the video cassettes were being purchased in Korea from a third party. The studio/professional tape was always made in Germany.
The local factory was always managed by transplanted Germans (on rotation) who never understood American culture. They also had an extreme problem with listening. In spite of that, it wasn't a bad place to work.
They are in the "chemical" business, as they were one of our competitors when I worked for DOW Chemical. I think their slogan was: "we dont make plactics, we make them better", or something like that.
