Post 1986 Ranger running problem

My Ranger will start and run at Idle but as soon as you step on the gas it will stall.I've checked all the wirer and sparkplugs. It started running weird about a week ago. It would run on 3 cyclinder until it warmed up then it run on all four but only after it warmed up. The engine is the 2.3 liter which was replaced earlier this year.

Start with the simple things first.

plugs, wires, etc,. Especially any plug/wire on the cylinder not firing.

Changed out the fuel filter and now the darn thing won't even start. It tries but just will not start. Any more suggestions.

Check the fuel pressure, one of the pumps might be going bad.

Change the low pressure fuel pump, fuel filter, and now the regulator. New pump was putting out 90 PSI and nothing going back to tank. Changing the last item today. There was also a sump like device inline before the fuel filter that I replaced. What else could be defective.
Thanks

If you still have high fuel pressure after the regulator is replaced check for a clogged return line. Are you refering to the high pressure pump?

The pump I replaced was the pump in the tank which I'm told is the low pressure pump. Lots of fun replacing it.

Did you drop the tank? It's easier to pull the bed off. Hows the fuel pressure after replacing the FPR?

Since he's getting 90 psi at the rail it's a good place to start, should be 30-40.

1986 Ranger running problem

Well I got the Ranger running. I ended up changing out the fuel pump on the tank, the fuel resevoir that's located just before the inline filter and finally the fuel pressure regulator. What I didn't know was that the fuel resevoir which by the way is not even mentioned in the Chiltons manual, has a filter in it and I believe thats what started the whole problem. That filter became plug which caused my tank pump to fail. From what I've learned Ford only put this device on for a year or so. What I don't understand is why they put it in front of the inline filter. Oh well you learn something new each day. I appreciate the help and am glad to report the old truck is running like a top. Again Thanks I really like this site.
