Rain Leaks

Hey guys, newbie here.
Having problems with the carpet getting wet both in the 2nd row area and the 3 door area.
I fixed the rear a/c evaporator condensing problem that soaked the rear carpet once.
Now I'm getting a damp carpet in the rear occasionally, but am getting the middle row area soaked as well.
When you pull the door sill plates, there's water in the wireway underneath.
I've used the garden hose trick and think I've narrowed it down to the door weatherstrip not doing it's job.
My plan at this point is to pull the weatherstrip and apply some silicone adheesive to the weatherstrip where it pushes onto the door opening flange.
Anybody else had this problem?
It seems to be that way on both sides so this really seems like it must be a design flaw.
Any others share the experience?
Mines a 2000.
Thanks,
Joe

No problem here with the interior besides a broken head light switch and the right rear wing doors top molding is always coming loose.

Is this a ford problem? I have the same issue in an 03 X with only 10k on her. My 96 Bronco was the same. The Bronco was so bad that I drilled more drainage holes in the wire-track under door sills. That helped a bunch but now the X is the same. I get wet carpet near all doors and the rear? It is not due to windows open or doors left ajar so what gives? The rear cargo mat used to sweat and leave condensation between the rubber side of the mat and the truck carpet but I removed that. I blamed that on the humidity in Alabama. I have contemplated bringing it to the stealer but never like to since they always try to find a reason to blame me not the manufaturer. I am sure my problem will be blamed on the lift kit!!

Well sure they will...you're that much closer to the source of the rain LOL.
I modified my plan a bit once I approached the project....
I went ahead and put the weatherstripping back on as it came off.
I then used GE silicone adhesive between the body and the part that pushes down over the flange. I kept it away from the actual sealing surface because I think the water is running back between the part that grips the flange and the flange.
It took a full tube in the caulk gun to do the two rear doors and the 3 door area.
Should be a rainy week here so I'll be posting results soon

Can you explain what you mean by A/C Condensing problem? I have had damp carpet in the rear under my mat, so had to remove the mat to allow it to dry up. Have had this happen a few times, so the mat is permanently removed. Wish I could keep it back there to protect the carpet from spills, but can't let it stay wet. Did the water hose test and find no leakage. I looked in the side panel and all appeared to be dry in and around the rear A/C hardware.

Well for me, the AC condensing problem was quite obvious in that side panel where the rear condenser and blower is. My problem was that the tar-like spongy kind of insulation had fallen loose from the lines running to/from the condenser and water was condensing on the lines from the air inside of the truck. And here in Houston, that's alot. There's also a drain in the condenser box that can become plugged, which can cause the water that normally condenses in the box to overflow into the compartment, but that wasn't my problem.
But if you're not seeing water in that compartment, I'm thinking it must be something different...
I haven't investigated this yet, but when I had a Suburban, I know the evaporator section in the roof, also had a drain. If that plugs, there could be big problems there as well.

Thanks Joesgt281, I know what you mean on the sticky stuff. I did see a small piece coming off while I was inspecting that area and I re-stuck it around the tubing.
I also store some tools and towels in that area and all was dry, so not sure where the moisture is comiing from.

joestg - I think you may have something there. I recently discovered the carpet and mat soaked underneath my cargo liner from the rear door up about 2 1/2 feet. I took everything out and dried out.

I suspected it had gotten drenched from one night when I left the two rear vent windows open in the rain. Then it rained and the carpet got wet again - all windows closed.

So I dried everything out again and cleaned all the area around the the rear hatch and two doors like someone suggested in another thread to make sure water wasn't backing up. Rubbed silicone spray on all the weatherstripping. Removed the spare and side panels to make sure there weren't any leaks from the vent windows - the darn thing is still leaking.

I don't get it - I've had this truck five years and this just started. Anybody else have any ideas? All advice appreciated - thanks.

I have leak checked many vehicles that had hard to find leaks, the only way to know for sure is to pull some interior out of it and get inside while somebody sprays water all over it from different angles. Then seal the leak with urethane. (if its a body seam or window) - Its a lot of work but it is better than rust and stinky carpet. Extra drain holes are better than nothing, just be sure to rust proof the bare metal where you drill.

I have a 2002 XLT... I had some leaking at the driver's door and rear passenger-side door. The dealer replaced the rubber seals(looks different than original) and that solved the issue... I have no issue with water on carpets..

That brings up a good point....is this a warranty, or perhaps a recall issue?
I'm beyond warranty, but it could still be a leverage item if the later ones were getting fixed.

Update - I've narrowed the leak down to the area in the corner just behind the spare tire. I took all the interior molding in that area out but still can't find the leak. I will have to try the sit in the back and let someone spray the truck thing - good idea - thanks.

My brother has a 2000 X and he recently started experiencing this leaking problem. It was traced to the rear door window seal. The dealer replaced the entire seal and sent him on his way - no charge. Apparently, this is a common problem with the earlier X's.

Hinge? Which one and how would you seal a hinge? Aren't they all on the outside of the seals?
