Don't start or drive it anymore. Check your OIL!!!!!! Sounds like blown head gaskets and your leaking into your oil. You could hydrolock the engine and bend a rod if you keep starting it and that is the case.

I would suggest you fill the rad to capacity, then get a coolant system pressure tester, I think Autozone lends them??.

When was the thermostat last changed, if it is an aftermarket Tstat it will boil over and overheat. Check yout hose to the coolant recovery bottle make sure it is clear and tight at the rad connection. What rad cap, it should be 13lbs.

Smell the exhaust does it smell sweet like coolant..............

My fear would be a cracked head around an exhaust valve, this would put coolant into the exhaust manifold causing white sweet smelling smoke.

Only way to tell if it is safe to start would be to hand crank the engine over 4 complete rotations. If there are no hard spots or complete stops of the rotation then starting may be attempted.

To figure out which side was the culprit you would have to remove or at least loosen the Y pipe and watch for smoke.

Only other thing would be a compression test possibly.

Here is a thought. If its an auto, check the tranny fluid for coolant, could be the bottom fo the rad is leaking into the tranny portion of the rad.

i put fluid in the radiator to the top and put some in the reserve and this morning it still looks good. not seeing the post yet about cranking by hand i started it drove it shortly and no smoke, let it idle some more and fluid seems fine whereas before fluid was draining immediately. but before i was putting the fluid in the reserve tank not in the actuall radiator, could it have been going through the system out of the reserve tank as soonas i put it in?
thanks everyone for your help

If you were adding only to the resv, then yes it will suck it out untill the rad is filled.Once its full make sure the resv is also filled to the mark on it and be sure the overflow hose goes to the bottom of the resv.
