I recently was given an 83 ranger which I am doing a little work on. The truck is pretty much of a bare bones unit....no thrills, engine is a 2.3 liter, auto trans. I have no reverse and want to get into the tranny. The door sticker shows a "W" for the transmission code. Anyone know which tranny this is? I want to get some tech info on the tranny but until I find out which one it is, I am "reverseless". Thanks for the help!!:-X11
Auto trans for 2.3L was called a C-3 on 4x2, for 2.8L the trans was a C-5 for both 4x2 and 4x4. Lot of people would like to have a C-3 to replace the later auto trans called A4LD. Don't scrap it if you end up not needing it. If you want more specific details like gear ratio's etc. I think I have an old Ford Shop manual 6" thick for 83 Ranger that has more details.
Disregard my prior post. Both C-3's and C-5's were offered on 2.3L in 83. Let me dig for the shop manual's over the weekend. Or better yet, pull the trans and take it to a reliable trans rebuild person to identify and estimate a repair price. Used trans's from a junk yard are in the $300-600 range and probably need rebuilt on top of that.
