M5OD Question

I am wanting to pull the shifter out on my 89 F-150's M5OD. In the Chilton manual it says to put the transmission in NEUTRAL before doing this if you are going to pull the stub shaft and the shifter all at once. In the tech article about changing out the shift cover plugs on this website, it says put the trans. in FIRST gear before doing this. What harm can I do by doing it the wrong way? I am just trying to avoid opening a can of worms. Thanks!

Wreck...it doesn't matter. I left my transmission in first gear when I did my plugs - and it was a ...... (Insert: Big Fricking Pain) to get the transmission set right again. Couse...I moved the shifter (whoops) when it was out of the truck so...

Just leave it in neutral..won't have problems that way getting hte forks to line back up and all that jazz.

I left mine in neutral when I changed my clutch and slave cylinder. I didn't change the plugs though, I just took the whole shifter out so I could get the trans out of the truck. I took the 3 bolts off the top and it came out, I think they where torx style.
