whats up
i have searched the forums for advice, but this is my first post. Well i live off a unmaintained dirt road and it just recently snowed about a foot. Anyway i turned on my 4x4 low range (manual hubs, with the dial on the dash). And i left it over night. Well the problem now is that it is stuck in four wheel drive. i unlocked the hubs and swithed off the dial but it lights still stay lit and i am still in 4x4. help please
if your hubs are unlocked it shouldn't matter the front axle might be turning but the hubs are unlocked and no power is transmitted to the wheels.
Yeah, but low range is going to make for a slow trip down the road!!
To get out of 4x4 Lo (and this applies equally well to manual shifted transfer cases, but sometimes brute force will allow you to overcome these restrictions): put the transmission in neutral; put your foot on the brake; turn the switch to 2wd; wait up to 10 seconds. It should come out. If not, try putting it back in gear and moving a few feet and then putting back in neutral trying again.
Neutral (*not* park or drive-but-with-brake-on!) is critical to release the tension between the engine and the transfer case. Having your foot on the brake is safe to keep from rolling while in neutral, but I believe the ESOF system actually enforces is electrically (if it doesn't see the brake, it won't shift out of 4-lo).
thanks for everybodys help. i took your advise and backed up the a little forward. then i shifted to neutral and turned off the 4x4 and it worked i appriciate everyones help. you will be hearing for me soon
Glad it worked out for you. I have found that leaving a 4x4 in 4 wheel drive overnight in cold weather can cause it to want to stay in 4 wheel mode. The best solution is to drive it enough to warm things up a little then try to shift back to 2 wheel drive.
Had this same problem in a 99 F150 with the four low. At 35,500 miles the truch got stuck in four low due mainly to several inches of ice under it. A trip to the dealer and a new four wheel drive motor ($700ish) covered under warranty and a big thaw it was back to normal.
Yeah that does bring back memories , I had a '74 Bronco with front and back plows and every once in a while it wouldn't want to come out of four wheel drive......I'd unlock the hubs and lift the rear of the Bronco off the ground with the back blade , put it in reverse to unbind everything . Funny how it can do something like that .
My 93 ranger had the ESOF 4 wheel and liked to get stuck in low range quite a bit. Rocking it back and forth slowly was the only way to get it out of low. Dealer even came out to my job site (mud hole) and showed me how to do it.
