I am interested in adding the factory DVD unit to my 2003 Limited. For those with experience with this, does my vehicle have the necessary wiring needed? If not, how much will the dealer charge me for the loom? If you have the part#, that would be fantastic! Any advice with this task would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I am currently in the process of installing an oem out of a 2004 Ex in my 2001. I bought mine through a salvage yard and the dvd unit came with the plug that goes into the unit and about 8" of the wiring before the salvage yard cut it. I bought a ford cd changer harness part #XU3F-14588-DA, the long version. This harness plugs into the rear of the factory stereo and then the original truck harness plugs into it. I then cut the wires on the cd changer end of the new harness and spliced it to the dvd unit plug. Wire colors are the same. You do need the 6 disc changer that has the dvd programmig. I tried to get my 2001 cd/tape player to recognize the dvd but couldn't get it to work. If yours is a 2003 and has the 6 disc you should be fine. So basically if you don't have the plug like I got with mine, you could check to see if you could get it from a dealer or a car audio shop and get this harness. I did a little research and could find nothing on a harness for the dvd unit. Hope this helps.
I'm sure it can be done...
but have you consider an aftermarket unit ?
We got a $700 10 inch portable dvd player that is MUCH nicer than the OEM version (IMHO, of course )
And it can be moved from car to car... or into the house when the grand-daughter says... "I wanna watch the end Pop-Pop"
I thought about the OEm unit as well but I am not sure what happens to the over head controls. I guess I would need to see an EX with the DVD set up to understand what I need to do or not do. I think we have a CD changer as well?
First, yes it can be done. I had a friend at a local car stereo place (Davids Car Stereo) take care of it for me. Total cost was about $200 with three sets of wireless head phones. The factory Dvd was the way to go for me. It's very nice to have the player off the floor and not in the console and it looks the best in my book. The rear controls will be relocated behind the drivers head and the dvd player itself will be behind the passenger head. Check out ebay item #7937032930 to see a factory set up. Let me know if you need some more help. I bought mine off ebay and research having it install for about 6 months.

I didnt want OEM DVD in my 04 expedition - I have found many different systems out there that were cheaper by far and larger screens. We bought one that has two screens - one for each kid - NO FIGHTING THIS WAY. And it cost $1100 less!!!!!!!
There is an OEM on ebay now. The bid is way to high for me. I can clearly see how if fits in with the over head console and my current heater controls. To bad the bid is so high because it is the color of my interior. Oh well maybe next time. I may end up with some sort of after market set up as well if the OEM units cost this much.
I'll try and get the wife to take a picture of ours installed in our 2000 Excursion some time this weekend. Hey, what was the ebay number for the one you saw on ebay? I paid $450.00 for mine earlier this year. Bottom line keep your eyes open and you can find a deal. Since January there's been a lot of them sold on ebay (Click on completed items). You may have to let them sit a while before touching them. You know give them time to cool down. The system is made by Delphi Systems and they don't sell to the public.

I just did a search last night on completed items and saw a few units that have sold. The pirce seems to range between $400 and $600. For $400 I would buy one but $600 is pushing it.
No need for pictures now that I have seen what the unit looks like. Thanks for the offer. At the time of my post I was thinking my heater controls were attached to the over head console, they're not. So the install looks pretty straight forward? I will keep my eyes open for one and maybe after the holidays the price will come back down a bit.

BOSS302, regarding your OEM DVD install, how did you handle connecting to your 2000 Excursion's head unit? More specifically, how are you handling the audio, even if you are not using the head unit to control the dvd player?
I am under the impression that the 2003+ CD-6 head unit with dvd control capability id the only true plug and play option. I have a 2001 and have used an interface box (hard-wired), but am trying to cleanup some considerable audio interference that I am experiencing.
I'm really not exactly sure how its wired up. My wife took it to Davids Car Stereo and they did all the work. I do know from doing my homework to hook it (plug in to plug in) you'll have to buy a 2003 radio. I'm sure they properly hard wired my system in. Mine will play over the factory speakers in the vehicle and I also have wireless headphones that work also. I've noticed lately that when I start the truck I here some humming noise in the DVD Player. It's when I'm waiting on the glow plugs (I have a diesel). I called them the other day and they said to bring it back in to install a filter.
