93 7.3L factory turbo, oh yeah, guess what its diesel (go figure).
Where does a 4" downpipe hit on the engine or firewall? I dont mind doing a little work to the firewall with a hammer if necessary, but if its the pipe that hits the firewall, then there is a problem.
Anyone know of a company that makes a 4" downpipe for this turbo?
I wouldnt think a 4inch pipe would be necessary unless your going to put in some strong rods and hot injectors on it and crank up the pump. Factory turbo doesnt have that much boost anyway. 3inch would be plenty of breathing tube.
There is a cab seam that is in the way. It must be flattened out to install a three inch downtube.
Not sure if a 4" will even fit without lifting the body.
Check with a local muffler shop, they may be able to fab somethign up.
As well, I agree with the lack of room, without a lift. Although if you finally got all that stuff off (TURBO), you'll know what a tight fit it really is back there.
I still gotta send those pics out, or get them posted - as well. Have not forgotten, just had no good time to accomplish that.
If your looking to do it yourself, no reason why you can't just weld yourself up a 4 inch at the end, slightly flat to get past the cab (bend the cab seam flat, if you can) then allow the downpipe to come back to regular shape (4" round) to continue to your exhaust pipe, stack or muffler.
Not sure if the flattening of the pipe is a good idea or not though. Might not be worth the effort if your still restricting down to a 3" size anyway. Might even need some heat shielding to keep the pipe heat away from anything of value there as well.
3" downpipe is a tight fit as it is - as many can attest to.
Ok. If I do the 3" I would like to have a gradual increase to 4" over about 1 foot so that I can have a larger exhaust tip-3.5 isnt big enough for me.
Becuase of this, I just want the downpipe from ATS and the pipe that goes from it to right below the engine bay nest to the tranny. After that, its off to an exhaust shop to buy some 4" tubing and a couple of mandrel bends so I can fab my own exhaust.
Plans are to leave off the muffler and have the pipe short and come out in front of the passenger side tire. Do youthink it will dry out the tire if its a foot and a half in front, slanted downwards a little?
no,ive had all kinds of buckets of bolts with exhaust run infront of tires,it was fine,it will be louder in the cab though, mine is 3" straight from behind passenger wheel, still kinda loud in the cab with the windows up,but i like loud, everthing i have is loud,my road king has 4"tail straight dauls that ear peircing,i love it,one day i'll be deaf.
Take the downpipe to a muffler shop and have them swedge the lower end bigger. They will probably have to use a couple of pieces to get from 3" to 4". The downpipe and turbo outlet are all you need from ATS.
With the 2" body lift I have on my truck, I could probably get a 5" pipe in there now.
When I looked back between the cab and block I figured 2" would give me enough clearance for the three inch downpipe. I underestimated how much room I would wind up with. I have lots of clearance all around the three inch pipe, no cab seam even came close to the pipe.
The only thing to be said about the ATS kit is the fact that the mandrel bent tubes are a constant size, where the ones bent at your muffler shop are squeezed down some in the bends.
Locally I can not find a shop that can bend anything over 3" pipe.
A couple of weeks ago I was working at a Federal prison. There were some electricians there bending 4 and 5 inch EMT conduit. The bender they had made nice bends that looked as good as mandrel bent pipes, the old noggin started to think about exhaust pipes again, but big ones this time.
Yeah, I might have to look around for a while to find a place that can do it. If not I may be able to order some off the internet or something, and just have to do more welding. The ATS kit is nice, but I want a shorter exhaust that is wider to come out in front of the wheels, and also to save money.
