i have a c5 tranny that has went bad, if theres any one who can help me with how long it usally takes to get it out and if anyone knows were i can get a cheap rebuild or a used tranny please let me know cause winter is here in my town and we just got 4-5 inches i cant go anywhere.
trans bad or just the clutch? You can have the trans out in a couple hours..just remember where everything goes. I've had mine out ,it's automatic, a couple times in just a weeks time cuz it was leaking..all fixed now. I can now have it out in less then a hours time..and that's by myself and reinstalled in under 3..kinda hard lining it up by yourself but i managed..3rd times a charm. local junk yard should have one..or you can even get one cheap off ebay.
thanks for your input but im not sure what to tell you about how its working but the clutch seems ok but i dont know to much about it. all i know is it wont move exept for backwards. i never changed one of these before so i hope it goes well. how can you tell if its the clutch?
Don't forget to check the fluid level in the hydraulic clutch resivoir...should be a little round container located on the firewall in the engine compartment. Right around the steering shaft...top it off with brake fluid...
see whats left of the clutch. It seems like a difficult task but it is pretty straight forward. Do your self a favor and scribe (mark) a couple of things first. This will help in aligning everything to where it was. The drive shaft and the differential, the drive shaft and the transfer case. This should be done at both ends. Not sure if it will make a difference but can't hurt. Someone may have not done this in the past and it may cause some unwanted vibrations. If you dont feel comfortable then get someone to help or take it somewhere, but if you have some decent mechanical skills, it's not a difficult task all told...
You should be able to find one on any of the Bronco II/Ranger sites or a Boneyard. They only came in 1984 Bronco II's so make sure your getting the correct tranny. You can have your existing trans rebuilt as well or if your handy rebuild it yourself.
If you have never pulled a transmission in any 4X4 before give yourself lots of time. Disregard the claims of others. They are not you. The transfer case weighs about 85 pounds (estimate) and is awkward. It will have to be removed with the tranny or separated from it before removal.
