About the only beefing up you can do to the internals of a TTB 44 is to swap in a D50 stub shaft on the passengers side. It's teh same 30 spline setup, it just doesn't neck down like the 44 shaft. Besides that, add some bracing to the housing and go for it. The TTB bends fairly easily when you mix big rubber with rocks.
IF you're really concerned about breakage use an auto tranny, keep it to 4.11's, keep it to 35's, and leave the 300 where it is. It has the down low power to get you moving, but not really the speed to actually break stuff. If some breakage is acceptable put a 4 speed in, but trust me on the other stuff.
I'm doing 35's with a completely stock TTB 44 and manage to bend it in new and interesting shapes everytime i take it out. Only exception was this last time because i broke enough stuff that I wasn't on the trail long enough to really push the TTB. I have yet to lose a TTB axle, I tend to destroy driveline u-joints before anything else.
well after making a trip to tellico (in a 2wd ranger, lol) i've come to terms with my truck and have decided that I'm mainly going for a somewhat functional, good looking truck that I can have fun in the mud with.... I guess I just expect too much... not to mention that I wouldnt make a f-150 (full-size) into a trail rig, I would rather use a small truck or suv type deal... the trails in tellico are for more experienced people with way too much money, lol....
I looked at my friends 79 and realized that the radius arm brackets are completly different, I'm not even going to attempt the time to do alot of fab work.... I just want to be able to get out of wet grass, lol.....
Is there such a thing as 16.5" wheels in 5-lug? I found a set of 35x14.50x16.5 set of boggers for $40, so I'd like to buy them just to throw on for a day of fun.....
hold on, the d50 is an 8 lug isnt it???? I was under the impression that 3/4 ton trucks were solid axle, and not ttb, is the d50 is an 8 lug it would be hellashiously easier to find a cheap set of 16.5" wheels..... but damn I'm sure the d50 is worth alot more than a regular d44....
D50 is an 8 lug TTB BUT the housing arms are different lengths from the D44, they don't swap. However, you can use GM parts to convert your TTB 44 to 8 lug.
When you say housing arms dont swap does that mean the d50 wont swap in place of my 2wd stuff like the d44 will???? I'm really interested in swapping to an 8 lug as I am getting 4wd.... but I appreciate the help...
Nope, the D50 has shorter beams than a D44 LD(F150) TTB, and is leaf sprung...
It isn't going to bolt in your half ton any time soon.
I suppose he could get the crossmember from a similar year F250HD and get the complete D50 ttb to fit.
The big limitation of the TTB D44 in comaprison to the solid d44 is the availability of aftermarket alloy axles. The are virtually none existant. Therein lies the biggest problem.
So if the d50 is leaf sprung but still TTB will I need my "axle alignement drop down brackets"? and where would the crossmember bolt to? The frame is the same so I dont have to cut or re-do the frame do I? I have all the cutting stuff and welding stuff, but I'd like to know before hand.... Is the d50 swap really worth the trouble???

no. it is just not worth it. the axle pivot brackets are different, along with the leafs.
if you where to go through the trouble of putting in a d50, a leafsprung SA would be half the work, think about, with a SA all you have to do is make brackets for the leafs, and nothing else, where as D50 would require the crossmember work also.
Tomorrow I'm going to look at an 85 f-150 with everything I need, it supposedly has 38's on it and a 300/6 with a carb, the body is as badly beaten as a catholic school girl, and the interior smells like pookey, so it sounds like the perfect donor.... they want $700 for it and the motor runs better than mine.... I havent seen it but my friend was going to buy it so he gave it a good once over, but he got the 79 instead... I hope that this one will work out because I got stuck yet once again today, in a driveway, so I tried to go down the hill through the woods and one of my I-beams hung up on a stump, so we had to chain saw it down.... now that I'm going to install satellite dishes I need to have my truck as functional as possible, lol I dont think customers appreciate their yards being tore up.....
sorry fishmanndotcom, but I think that d50 wont do me any good whatsoever.... also that 85 has a lift kit as well, so I may be able to mix and match something, make an evil combination....
