I've found a '74 f-100 longbed. The driver's side back panel on the bed has rusted out and been filled with fiberglass. I would like to replace the whole side and put dual gas doors on it. There's also a small dent on the other side. Could anyone give me a ballpark figure on what a bodyshop might charge to cut off the old panel and weld on the new then just prime it and pull out the dent.
A bedside R&R is roughly a 12 hour job, including unbolting the bed - not including paint work. Body work in my area is around $40 an hour right now. On a 74 you could have some rust issues in the areas that the new panel would weld to, increasing the cost some. Dual gas doors - dent in the other side..... $700 - $800 total??
Would it be easier for the shop and cheaper for me to take the bed off and up to the shop and now knowing the approx. price just a patch panel for that area.
that would definatly be easier and probably cheaper too. if you do the whole bed side you might as well buy another bed for it since it would only cost about 1 or 2 hundred more than the price of the bed side. heres a site to check for a new bed.

(Oooops, in my price I forgot about the price of the new bedside panel itself, a couple hundred more)
If you're doing just a patch panel, it's usually best to do it with the bed on the truck. The only reason to take the bed off for an entire panel replacement is so the seam area behind the cab is accessible for welding. Shouldn't be an issue with a patch. If anything is done to the bed off the truck, make sure the person doing it knows what he's doing. It's not much fun to get a bed looking all nice and perfect, and put it on the truck and find that the body lines don't match up with the cab, or the wheel. I've been there and done that!! Did a lot of carefull measuring on the next one I did!!
As center4X4 said, a bed replacement may be the best way to go. 73 -79 are all the same, with the exception of some gas filler opening differences.
