I recently purchased a '89 f250 7.3 DSL 4x4 and trying to learn as much as i can about them. gotta couple of things im curious about. first it used only blow white smoke at the start which I learned is ok but now it seems to be blowing out a bluish/greyish smoke every time i gun it, ive heard that blue smoke is bad but dont know for sure. its smoking more than what seems normal. i know whenever diesels are gassed really hard they do let out a lot of exhaust but this keeps going even after i let off sometimes. ok next every now and then when im braking i hear a big clunk right under me sounds like a big load shifting in the back. i dont know for sure but it seems to happen normally after its been in 4 wheel low off road. like i said im trying to learn so anything helps. thanks a lot
First off sounds like you have higher mileage on the truck which means that the injectors have wore. You can start using a fuel treatment that should help a bit. Watch your oil and see how much you use/leak between changes. You dont want blue smoke, means bad rings on pistons or bad injectors, I've seen both cause this problem. Go to this site for more help on it.
Check the air filter first, make sure it is clean. When they burn oil, they make a lot of blue smoke .. you should know when ya see it. The clunking may be the worn rubber in the front axle torque arm, right under your left foot. Give it a rich treatment of diesel kleen or power service. If it is starting up and throwing white smoke, you probably have a cylinder that isnt heating up quite right. (glow plugs maybe)
They will not always smoke horibly if they have a cracked ring. I have seen many of these old diesels that have wear on them burn oil and only smoke a little everynow and then.
