I found a truck I would like to buy, but need help with the vin decode:
transmission is A its a 4spd with ganny low and Axle is 16, it is a 4x4.
the motor is a 300 6cy.
I now have a 1979 F150 with a 300 6cy, 4spd new process 435, 2 spd transfer case 205 new process and rear gear ratio 3:50, it a ford 9" 10 bolt rear end. How well can I pull things ? What kind of gas milage should I get ?
How do I find out about the front axle ? Dana same gear ratio ?
you should get fair millage. about 13 i'd say. the 3.50 should be the same in both axles. i think the 44 and 9" have the same ratios. the 44 and 60 are off. mine is 4.09 front and 4.10 rear.

If you read some posts in the drivetrain forum you will notice, the front & rear ratios were made like that so one of them is holding back the other a LITTLE.
why did they do this. it doesn't make sense. why did they want tension on the t-case. I think it would have been better to have a 44 and 60 with the 4.10's or 4.09's instead of both. Like the 9 and the 44 3.54 and 3.50. theres a big difference there .04. I gues they used that because thats what was produced but why do they want the tension on it?
