I have scored a 1990 Crown Vic donor with 302 and AOD; would prefer to use a standard T5 tranny from 82-95 Mustang if possible. I will have all harnesses and CPU from Crown VIc
Is it a simply changing out bell housing , clutch etc ? If not, what would I be up against. I have searched forums but did not fiind specifics I need.
You will need a different computer as it is different for a manual tranny. If the fuel injection is speed density you can use a truck computer that had a manual. If it's mass air you would have to find a 89-93 mustang computer and do a little rewiring since they used the 351w firing order while you use the 302 firing order. This info may no be acurate because I have not done this but have read only a little on the subject.
Once you remove the AOD, and (A/T) flex plate and (A/T) rear engine cover plate from the 302, you will need to install a (M/T) rear engine cover plate, (M/T) pilot bearing and (M/T) flywheel. If the T-5 is from a 302 it will bolt right up. Use the clutch parts and starter from the T-5 donor.
If you have part number questions, call the Ford Motor Sport Hot Line Tech assistance number listed in their catalog.
It can be done. Stay above '82 with all parts and it is easier. As Pete indicated, Ford produced several variations. I think you're looking for a 13 1/4" flywheel, 50 oz imbalance.
If your T5 was behind a 4 or 6 cyl mustang the input shaft might be the small diameter, so check that carefully. I used the small bearing and had an adapter made by a local machine shop to fit the crank.
Make sure the bell housing you get is compatible with your clutch setup. Some push to release, some pull to release, etc. The pivot button differs accordingly.
I used a '73 302/C4 with an '85 T5 and the frustrating part was finding the right flywheel with the older (28 oz) imbalance. You can buy what you need from places like Jegs and Speedway, but I was scrounging junk yards.
Some patient searches in the engine swap forum and 302 forum should reveal the info you need.
Thanks for the input guys, I am looking at a 5.0 from a '92 Mustang, tranny not thre but pedals, clutch, bell housing still attached. sounds like even I can handle it
Thanks for the input; there is quite a cost difference which may be the deciding factor. I was going to buy the Mustang 302 with T5 but tranny was sold. As soon as I showed interest in the remaining parts, the price rocketed skyward.
I will look around this week for the Mustang 5.0 setup, can't have enough 302's
Take a look at some of the Mustang sites like stangnet or corral. They get into the detail of swapping a T5 for an AOD. The only thing they might not cover is the differences involved with this swap with respect to the HO versus non-HO motor.
