My sister in law has a '00 Excursion V10, and she told me this morning on the way back from her 150 mile trip that halfway back she heard a ticking noise when she went to pass a semi. They were up to 75 mph when they heard the noise. They backed off and the noise went away. When they got off the interstate the noise came back and for about 30 miles it stayed that way. I immediatly checked the oil and there it was, dry as a bone. It actually was very hard to get the dipstick out. I put in 6 quarts of 5-30 and checked it. It was fine. I had her run it for about 2 min and checked it again and the oil was pitch black. What is up with that? I told her to have the engine flushed out and to baby it from now on. Do you think any real damage was done? I know you would have to look at the oil to see if any metal is in it. I figure she just ran off about 20k of life off the V10. She then told me the oil pressure gauge had been fluxuating for the last few days. Where could have that oil gone? It does not leak. That is the part that is puzzling me. Thanks guys.
Yes. If the oil turns black after two minutes, something is wrong. Either deposits from burnt oil or you are getting blow-by from one or more cylinders. Either one is probably a sign that the engine suffered damage. You could have someone check compression when you flush the engine.
Where could have that oil gone? It does not leak.
Who did the last change? How long ago? Did you check the level then?
It could have been low and damaged something that caused it to burn the rest. Any smoke recently? Is it under warranty? The loss of oil could be a sympom rather than a cause, I suppose.
I dont know about the last oil change. I hardly even see the thing except when it needs to be cleaned or she has a general question. I just wondered if she ran it on old oil long enough it would have broken down and just burned off. I don't know if oil can break down and become thin enough to get by the rings or valves to burn. My interest in this is she babysits my son and my nephews ride in it and everyone else works and is not around to come get her if it breaks down. It has 81K on it so warranty is long gone. I will tell them to do a complete flush out and fill and then do a compression test after.
Well I'd have to agree with Capt Dan... black oil is never a good thing. Niether is the reported ticking sound although I can't imagine it not being heard before the engine was completely out of oil.
I'm no mechanic but an engine loses oil two ways...either it is burned off or it leaks out. If you say there were no leaks then it must have been burned and sent out the exhaust pipe somehow. Since you have put fresh oil in it and it seems fine, then I would have to wonder as Capt Dan did about the last oil change.
Knowing some of those "quick lube" places (and I'm not mentioning any names here), I have found that they are more "quick" than "lube" - I have had to go back a couple times myself to have them fix a problem.
The first time they did not replace the breather cap when they filled the oil. The second time they didn't tighten the drain plug completely and I had a nice puddle of fresh oil under my vehicle after the first stop! So now I double check everything as soon as they are done with my ride and before I pay for anything.
