Has anyone shopped for and bought an extended warranty on their new Ford SUV? Local dealer here wants $2600 to extend bumper to bumper out to 6 years/100K miles on a new Excursion Eddie Bauer 4X4 PSD. Price is only good during the first 5,000 miles and increases $450 every 5,000 miles after that and jumps to $5200 after 36K. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks, Jim

That's not a Ford extended warranty, but some knock-off; save your money. Ford's PremiumCare on that truck is $2680 for 6-year/ 100,000-mile coverage, and that price is good for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles. After that, till the end of the factory coverage, they add just $100 more, as long as you buy it before the end of the 3-year/36k. Keep in mind that Ford has an "announcement" to make about extended warranties on December 1st, which usually means a price increase.
I buight an aftermarket warranty for $2036 5yr/100k no deductable and have 60 days to decide on keeping it or not.
Can anyone shed some light on which companies are more reputable, or give good service over others.
My local dealer only wants to sell the Ford ESP plans for $2600
I bought a Warranty from C.A.R.S. in PA and have had nothing but problems collecting. I just had a major engine problem and they refused to pay and told me to contact their legal department.
Well I've heard both sides of this extended warranty arguement. I've had former dealers (who were also good friends of mine) tell me it's a rip-off and not worth the money, and I've had other frineds tell me that their warranty saved them thousands of dollars in expenses.
It's basically a crap shoot as far as I can tell. If you get a good vehicle, built on a Wednesday, then you stand a chance of never using your warranty - in which case you just paid for somethig you didn't need.
But if you aren't so lucky and you get a Friday vehicle that has a problem (or problems), then the warranty may just save you some serious money.
On a personal note, I purchased a Mercury Topaz (affectionately known as the Blue Bomb) which the local Ford dealer hated...that was one time where I KNOW the warranty paid off! I had the car for three years and never changed the tires on it. And when I traded it in on a truck, it still had the nubs on the tires! LOL! It spent more time in the air than on the ground!
Anyway, it's hard to judge whether an extended warranty is worth the money till it's too late to get it!
