some jerk has spray painted a spot on my explorer about the size of your hand , is there a way to remove it without hurting the original paint? thanks for any info
I don't know the type paint your explorer is painted with or its condition, but lacquer thinner will sometimes take spray can paint off. It can also ‘lift’ certain other paints so I would test it in a less conspicuous place, somewhere that if paint damage should occur, you can live with it (under the hood maybe).
Something less volatile that lacquer thinner is brake cleaner. I agree with what Huntsman said though, use caution.
I have in the past used EZ OFF oven cleaner to remove enamels (stripes, lettering, non-catalyzed paints). Be warned oven cleaner is caustic and can eat darn near anything if left unattended.
BTW: the finish on your vehicle is a two stage, or base coat clear coat.
My Ex's father was a bodyman if your original paint is base coat- clear coat it will buff out. Just be careful not to bubble the paint. It can be done on enamel paint as well. Most times if you have waxed your vehicle recently the spray paint will not stick. To paint a vehicle you have to scuff the original paint first so that new paint will stick. I hope that helps.
There's some spray can stuff called "graffiti remover" that is designed to remove spray paint, but it would still be a good idea to do a small test spot just in case. You can pick it up an pretty much any hardware store.
