'00 Ranger Door lock
I tried a search and didn't find anything. . . . . yet.
I just bought a '00 Ranger XLT Super Cab 4x4 used - 61,000 miles.
When I unlock the driver's door, I have to keep the key turned to the left to open the door.
Is this 'usual' on the Ranger?
I don't have to do this on the passenger side.
Also, when I close the door, it locks automatically.
The dealer only gave me one (1) key, which is annoying, but, he and I are going to have a 'conversation' about this issue.
Any suggestions on the door lock???
I have to be very aware of where I am putting the keys when I close the door.
Thanks in advance!!!
Keith
When I bought my truck 3 months ago, only had one key. Best ford dealer in town charged $113 to make a dupe. The independent car lot did split the cost of the key AFTER trying to tell me Walmart could make one for a $1. NOT! :-) Maybe your dealer will at least do what mine did, huh? GL!
Then I went off to eBay and purchased a new keyFOB (that alarm thing) for 20 bucks and programmed it in a minute. I think the dealer wanted 60 or 70 bucks for it.
As far as auto-locking:
Do you have the alarm system package on the truck? If you unlock with the FOB, what happens?
If you turn the key twice to the left, does it unlock both doors? Just wondering if the power locking mechanism or switch on the drivers side door is fried or malfunctioning. Maybe pull the armrest off the door and look at the connections on the switch. If they look suspect, clean them up with a bit of baking soda in warm water and a toothbrush.

Make the dealer give you a second key. As noted they're expensive.
You can't get a second one to work (see other threads about the anti-theft) without two that DO work, or the Ford dealer-only electronic box.
You haven't noted whether you have remote power locks or not.
I suspect a problem with the door lock mechanism.
While I usually open mine with the remote, I do know that I don't have to keep the key turned to the left when opening the door.
First, Happy Thanksgiving!!!
What a GREAT country we live in!!!!
Next. . .
Thanks for all of the replies.
I did some further checking on the truck, yesterday.
(I've been driving my little commuter car, until yesterday.)
1. The door lock on the passenger side - the key won't unlock the door. The key will turn, but, nothing happens. If I remember correctly, it worked before my first post. Now, I'm not sure, but, it absolutely does not work, now.
2. The truck does have power door locks and windows, but, I have no idea if it came with a remote entry system. (Wish it did.)
(When I bought the truck, there was no Owner's Manual, no 'build' sheet - nothing.) Just one key. If I had known that, I wouldn't have signed on the dotted line until the key(s) had been made.
I'm still talking with the salesman to get me the manual and extra keys.
I have no problem walking into the owner's office. I have now bought four (4) vehicles from his dealerships. He and I WILL talk.
These people will get sick and tired of seeing me! Ha! (Persistence is the name of the game.)
3. The power door lock switch (inside) does lock/unlock both doors.
4. Isn't the driver's window supposed to be 'automatic'? This one isn't.
(Not reaaly worried about that, though.)
Kinda strange that all of this stuff is occuring on the driver's door.
Possibly there was a problem and 'someone didn't put the puzzle back together properly'?!?!?!
Thanks again!!!!
After reading a BUNCH of stuff here, at FTE (Great site!!! Glad I found it!!) - my truck DOES have the ability to use a wireless remote, which I have just ordered (2) from one of the vendors/sponsors listed.
Now, to work on the key situation!!!!!
Thanks again!!

I'd be interested to know how the switches look on the driver's side door. Sounds like they are fouled or miswired in someway.
If you use the power door lock switch on the passenger side to unlock, does the door automatically relock itself? If it does, then the switch on the driver's side door may be making constant contact to relock itself.
(Sorry for the long post. Lots of stuff to cover.)
Thanks for all of the replies to date.
Here's where I stand, as of today.
1. The salesman called me today and apologized for not contacting me sooner, about the keys. The 'manager' was the one that said that I had to pay for the key(s). The salesman is going to make 'arrangements' for 2 keys to be made and programmed. (Stay tuned.)
1a. The salesman asked me to stop by the dealership today, and handed me a NEW set of Owners Manuals. 3 different booklets, including warranty information. (Even though the warranty was gone lonnnnnnnnnng ago.) I was surprised, to say the least.
To clarify, the salesman said that he knew that I had purchased 4 vehicles from this dealership, and that HE values my business, and, (I quote) he "can't understand how that guy became a 'manager'!"
2. The driver's side 'automatic' window switch. Thanks to "PatG"!!!
I went back out to the truck and just 'tapped' the window switch. Presto! The darn window went down - all the way! I guess because of my 'ham hands' and being used to a 'bowtie' I was keeping pressure on the switch too long. Thanks again, PatG!!!!!!!!
3. The door lock on the driver's door.
I asked the salesman what could be done about the locks. He said that 'apparently' the lock mechanism 'is out of adjustment.' (Duh.)
He said that when I bring the truck in to have the keys made, that he will have someone look at the locks.
(To reply to Rangerxlt02. . . when either door lock switch is used, (inside) the doors stay unlocked/unlocked. The only problem is when trying to unlock the truck from the outside. Driver's side - the key MUST be kept turned to the left, otherwise, the door 're-locks' when you pull up on the handle. Passenger's side - nothing happens when the key is turned either way.)
This is really maddening. As for both of the doors unlocking when I turn the key on the driver's side, twice. . .
Nope. Just the driver's door unlocks, when the key is kept to the left.
Although it doesn't look like it, I can't help but wonder IF the truck was ever hit on the driver's side.
According to the report from "CarFax", from the dealer, the truck originally was titled in Michigan, then in New Jersey, then traded here in Southern Maryland, with 'no reported' accidents. (Or whatever language they used.)
I'll see, I guess.
All in all. . . this is a pretty good little truck. I haven't owned a 'Blue Oval' in a bunch of years. I hope this one is as good as my old '77 F-150 4x4 was. (Or better!!!)
Thanks again, everyone!
Keith
