The check engine light went off & local guy said it was low efficiency. He said if it happens again take it to dealer, it may be covered. After a few weeks it came back on & now the car is over 80,00 miles by a couple hundred. The dealer says 80 k is the limit, not a mile over. Am I screwed? $1400+ for him to fix. Maybe $500 for aftermarket muffler shop to fix.
You can buy a Catco catalytic converter (Both air-fed and sealed) for 50 bucks from Summit. Put in the place of the originals, it will clean just as well. On F150's a single Catco often cleans better then BOTH of the cat's ever did. High flow also gives you better performance and a slight bit more sound.

$50 for a Catco? Is it emision legal? I've never heard of one so inexpensive. I have to be tested every 2 years. I have 1 1/2 years to go.
A little more(better) sound would be fine.
I have never worked on exhaust systems before so my questions are:
How is converter attached? By welding? I have access to a welder(B.I.L.)
Will the existing exhaust pipes be able to be reused or should original exhaust system be replaced. It's 6 years old.
Or maybe just get a shop to do it.
The converter is part of the pipe and would have to be cut off. The new one can be welded in or clamped and yes the pipes can be re-used DEPENDING ON THEIR CONDITION AND WEAR. If you haven't worked on exhaust before and don't have access to the right equipment I would suggest having a muffler shop do it. It may cost a little more than doing it yourself but they should be done in 15 minutes, which can be worth it.
Thanks Mr. 1081.
Brother in law with the welding machine likes to tear apart cars(they often take a while to get back together though)
If he can help I might consider doing it myself.
15 minutes of shop time = 8 hours my time probably.
I think I know which way to go.
