I am trying to find a replacement for the ring of bearings that goes inside my auto hubs. Obviously, I don't know the exact part name. When I took my hub apart to replace a brake rotor, one of the first parts I saw inside the hub was a ring with bearings in it that was broken in half. I believe it is held in place by a spring. What is the name of this part and where can I find it? Also, am I correct to assume that as long as I don't use 4WD I am safe to drive without this? Thanks.
If this ring of bearings was before the axle nut, it would have to be part of the auto hubs. If you could seal the end of the stovepipe on the rotor, the truck will drive fine without the auto hubs. Of course, 4WD would be disabled. If this bearing is BEHIND the axle nut - closer to the center of the truck, then it is a hub support bearing and it's very important. These are not difficult to replace, but you must be careful about driving the races in.
It is the outer one. It pretty much rides on the inside of the hub housing and it is held there by a spring, I believe. What would that part be called and would that be a dealer only item? Thanks.

If you want just the part you need,it will be dealer item. You can get both sides (complete) for about $90, depending what year you have, the WARN # should be 9790.
Unless you're really attached to the Automatics, a set of Warn Standard hubs will run about $60.00 for an axle set. And they're less prone to break...and so easy to install...and so readily available......and so think about it..
I would love to switch to manual hubs, but money is very tight right now. If it the difference between $60 and a $2 part, I really can't justify the extra expense with the amount of time I spend using 4WD. What would I ask for at the dealer to just get the part? Thanks.
If that is the case I may just make sure not to use 4WD until after Xmas when the money is there. I can't wait to get home and tell my girlfriend I have yet another project
BTW, a set of warn premiums is about $90, plus you need to get the conversion kit which i think is about another $25-35. The Warn standard manuals are cheaper, but the premiums have a lifetime warranty. That warranty has already paid off once for me.
I bought a cheap used set of Warn Standards off of E-Bay - they required a complete cleaning but were good to use! I just preferred to make the swap. If you have a "five bolt" hub, them you need no conversion kit - it'll convert with no additional parts. Three bolt hubs require a kit to use Warn hubs.
