hello can any one help me i started to read this forum and alot of u guys seem to know your stuff so hear i go i bought a 91 ford f450 super duty cab and chassies to make a tow truck out of it is a high mile truck 262,000 km. 7.3l diesel with the a40d trans the thing is when i drive the truck she shifts super hard from first to second but good frm second to 3rd now hears the strange thing the harder i drive her the smoother she shifts and some times if i am driving at speeds 60km to 100km and take my foot of the gas and then accelerate a gain the tranny will just not be there at all (you know just slip)and then all of the sudden she be back again srong as ever other wise she grips real hard and has lots of power by the way i just did a tranny service complete she was clean no metal fileings at all please help thanx finnie81
Sounds like you have a bad speed sensor. (most common) Trans goes into a default mode shifting near full pressure to keep the clutches from slipping and tranny from overheating.
Is it possible the previous owner installed a shift kit?
Does your "check engine" light come on before you start your truck? Does the OD light blink?
no check engine light that i know of. it might come on for like a second with the glow plugs wait to start light but i dont think so (i will check though)and no blinking od light as a matter of fact my od light only lights up in the off position this speed sensor where is it located can you please tell me?? and about the shift kit i would'nt bet on it i got the truck from an auction it's an ex city truck thank finnie81
Hello again.
The check engine light should go on for a second or two when the key is "on" before you crank. I mention this because the bulb may be burned out or removed whitch could mask other problems. If the OD lamp is normal and the speedo works it should not be the speed sensor. One is located on top of the rear end the other at the rear of the trans. I don't remember which location is used on your truck at the moment.
You may have internal trans slippage. There are also sensors in the trans itself.
You will have to get someone to hook up a scan tool for codes.
The best I have seen is in our fleet is about 160,000 miles before the trans is done. Your truck is probably on its 2nd trans.
Hope this helps a little.
