Which brake pads?

I am at 41,500 miles and I think I might be ready for some pads. They are not squeeling yet but I sometimes get a noise when stopping from slow speeds. Sort of sounds like brakes do when you use them for the first time after they have gotten wet. (If that makes sense) Seemed to start after I put on the Hellwig in the rear. Not sure why and doubt they are related. Anyhow, just wanted some input on brake pads you guys use if I get them apart and they do need changing. Thanks.

I'm currently using the Performance Friction (www.performancefriction.com) Z rated pads. Fronts are 0756.10 and the rears are 0757.10. So far so good. PF pads are what ART uses when he ships rotor/pad kits. I think he uses the standard carbon metallic pads. I also have the ART rotors and they've been working well for 40K+ miles.

How do you like your ART brakes? I think that is going to be my next upgrade for my EX. Been looking at both ART and FrozenRotors. Anyone have any pros and cons on these two.

LWM97,

You know, I experienced the same thing after installing the rear Hellwig rear bar also. I initially thought I did something wrong when I installed the bar. When stopping from low speeds with medium brake pressure I would have a noise, similar to large truck brakes, coming from the rear of brakes. Little more or less brake pedal pressure the noise would go away. After making several checks over the next few weeks, all swaybar related fasteners were still tight and at the same torque as when installed. Then I too, thought may rear pads were worn out. So, I ran to the local NAPA store, picked up some ceramic pads for ~$75.00. Installed the pads, noise was gone & truck seems to stop much better. As for the pads I replaced, they probably could/would have lasted several more months. But I could be wrong, I’ve had other pads when they get low they go quick. Not sure if it’s the heat or what but they went fast. Also, my feeling was if I’m yanking off both tires to check pads I want set of pads to throw on while the tires/wheels are off. Taking tires/wheels off (wheels stuck on axle) and back on (the several step process with torque wrench for lug nuts) can be chore & time consuming with the X’s. Thanks for reading, just thought I’d share.

glares,

As compared to factory rotors there is no comparison. The ART units have been excellent. If I replace them I would also look at the Performance Friction 2 piece units. These should further reduce any vibration due to the fact the rotor ring is bolted to the center hub, providing isolation.

Regards,

Joe

Thanks 88,
So I am not crazy thinking that that hellwig started the whole thing. You are describing my situiation exactly. A little more or less pressure and the noise is gone. Anyone have problem with break fade. Sometimes I can't get the X to stop even though I am hard on the brake pedal. It just kinda sloooows until it feels like stopping. I have never engageed the ABS even though I have stomped on the brakes. Thanks guys.

valvestud,
Thanks for the info. I will be looking into it soon. Brakes are not worn yet but I think I/we would benefit from better brakes and breaking power. When stock it seemed OK but with lift and bigger tires I think better brakes need to come into the picture soon.
