So I have a miss at idle once in a while. I can make it happen by applying heavy throttle (under load) then let it idle. Sounds like one cylinder missing untill I blip the throttle or put the engine under a load again.
My question is can I unplug the wires ( they do have wires right?? ) to the injector to help me find the the problem injector? Or is this a bad idea, trying to keep from taking it to the dealer.
When you pull the valve covers off you don't even need to unplug the injector because you will be able to see which injector is not spitting out oil as much as the others while it is idling.
You can also disconnect the wiring harnesses at the valve cover while the truck is running to try to isolate a miss. Each valve cover has two connectors at the top. Each one will control two injectors, and two glow plugs. Disconnecting one harness will disconnect two injectors, so finding a single one misfiring might not be as clear as unplugging a spark plug wire on a gasser, but it can be done.
I Wouldnt Unplug Them While Its Running One Can Get The Snot Knowcked Out Of You Dc Power Is Not Forgiving And You Could Arc Out The Inside Of The Injector Plug And Have To Get Injectors Worked On Because Of That. I Got Pictures Of What 480vdc Does To Someone It Aint Pretty
Quadzilla: The newer trucks have all 4 injectors and glows on 1 plug. I don't know for sure if a 99 would have the single plug, or duals however.
As for unplugging them at the injectors, been there, done that, more than once. Never had any problems caused by it, but, a breakout box would definatley be the way of doing it. Getting the valve covers off is too much of a PITA on a S/D when you could just use a breakout box.
I have the same symptoms on my 97. Runs great when I first start it, as soon as it warms up I get that mis. Everytime I pull the 19mm bolt out of the FPR and reinstall it the truck runs great. Oh yeah 2 plugs per cover and DON'T unplug while running! Arc= ow & $.
