For the past few days my engine has been running very rough. When I start the truck, the shift stick shakes violently and at low speed or standing at a red light, the exhaust pipe will even shake. A few times it sounded like the engine misfired but truthfully, I am not 100% what that actually does sound like.
I am going to take the truck in for a tuneup, it has 120k on it. Other info: 1998 Ford Explorer Sport, 120k, V6, 5-Speed.
At first I thought it was an exhaust problem but a quick visit to a Mad Hatter resolved this. His diagnosis was a tune-up without spending more than maybe 20 seconds listening to the pipe and the engine.
You didn't state how rough it runs at higher speeds. If it runs better, it could be a stuck open EGR valve. I assume you have the SOHC 4.0 engine in your 98, thats what I've got in my 98. A tune up could fix the problem if you have a bad spark plug, as it would cause a rough running problem, but with the "Shakin" you have going on at idle, it would have to be a couple of bad plugs.
Other checks include fuel delivery. With 120K miles, have you ever changed your fuel filter. I pulled mine off at 110K and I couldn't even blow through the dang thing (By mouth), it was PLUGGED. I couldn't believe it still ran! The Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) could also be a possibility. Check for any debris in the tiny oriface inside the MAF housing (a small opening with a tiny wire about the size of a hair which measures air flow). If you see any debris, DO NOT blast it clean with high pressure compressesd air, LOW PRESSURE only so you don't damage the wire.
Let us know what you find out, ok? Good luck.

At higher speeds, it also runs rough but not nearly as bad. I will take it in on Friday and then update here. I half suspect it's the fuel filter as it hasn't been changed.
