I have a 87 with a 2.9 V-6 and a automatic. I have replaced the ign, module and the fuel pump relay. But the truck still stalls on me
while driving. It doesn't do it all the time. When it does it has been at differant times, warmed up and still cold, driving and not driving. Usually, it will start up and then die again. If you let it sit for a couple minutes it will fire right up and be fine. Some times while driving it will it 0 on the tach and then jump right up to normal again. I can't keep pulling over in traffic when it dies. I don't know what else to try.
I agree about checking the fuel pressure. You really need to determine if the stalling is caused by a fuel problem, spark problem or computer issue. The next time it stalls see if you have a good spark, proper fuel pressure. Also pull the codes to see if there is a computer/sensor problem. I'm think it could be a wiring/connection problem since it happens hot and cold, the TFI is normally a hot problem. What is the status of the basic tune up parts? Does the weather/temperature effect it?
I've never had a Ranger V-6 but I had a similar problem on a Dakota I owned. They said it was the pickup coil(something like that). Well they charged me $150 but it never did it again. Money well spent I guess! I would check with a local mechanic just to be sure.
I've got an '86 Ranger with the 2.9l also, and was having similar problems to what you describe. I too replaced my Ign module, dist cap, rotor, wires, plugs, and coil, all to no avail. I was thinking about how it was acting and finally decided that it was, and could only be, the ignition pickup located in the distributor. The part is fairly cheap but requires quite a bit of time to replace, due to the fact that the distributor shaft must be removed and reinstalled, and in the process, the gear on the bottom must be pressed off and reinstalled precisely.
After replacing the pickup assembly, it has been running like a new vehicle and I'm very pleased.
