I'm a TR vet myself. Spent 94-99 onboard, 2 meds, 2 yard periods, 3 sets of workups. I got out as an ET1 a couple years ago. Did 10 years, and am now a contractor.
R U an independant contractor or one of the shipyard guys?
Do you ever regret getting out? (I mean, you were half way to a pension).
Sometimes I wish I had gotten out after my first enlistment. The TR isn't my favorite duty station, as it hasn't done much to enhance my career. I did get to see some pretty cool places on the last cruise, though. I am glad, though, that I don't have to do any more cruises, or sea duty after May, as my career will end on shore duty.
I'm an independent contractor doing R&D work. I haven't regretted my decision once. I pretty much picked up my stuff and just moved to a different office at the same command, doing the same work. I'm happy as can be with my choice.
Glad the system works once in a while. I've met lots of folks who got out like you did and regretted it. Sometimes I wonder what the heck I was thinking, re-enlisting. But I love the security of knowing the check is going to be in the bank.
I retired from the Navy in 1979 as an ENCS(SS), went to work on the Naval Station and did 20 years there and retired from there five years ago as a GS-11 mechanical engineering technician (HVAC).
I am a ETC in Norfolk and is stationed aboard the USS San Jacinto CG 56. 16 years down and only 4 to go!!!! I spent my first tour aboard the USS Inchon LPH 12 (yea another Gator) Fun shore duty at SACLANT. Then the USNS Narragansett T-ATF167. If you think a Gator rollls a lot then you try an ocean going tug. Next was the USS Kauffman FFG 59. I gave a shot at teaching at FTC Norfolk for a while. Now as I said, I am on the San Jacinto.
PN1 Davis, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). 16 years and looking forward to my next career! (Don't know what it will be yet, but...) Tomcat, if you plan on going navy, what do you want to do? Make sure they give you an 'A' school, or you'll end up scraping paint for a living.olgreymare86, good luck on the Kearsarge. I hear she's getting up there in age. Those flat bottom ships roll pretty good, too. I did two years on the Belleau Wood (LHA 3), and MAN, could she roll!
Belleau Wood (LHA3) Sasebo Japan right??? I loved that place.
I "retired" 12/1999 almost 24 years, EMC SS/SW. Quality Assurance Director with a consulting firm ouside of DC.
You career skimmers will get a kick out of this little sea story.....on my first underway on my first (and only) surface ship (tender) I didn't go outside for almost a week....I didn't realize I could! Gotta admit the view from the O-2 beats periscope liberty any day...but I could never shake that feeling of being watched...and a sitting duck!
I'm in the Navy. Used to work on F-14 Tomcats but am currently in california going through transition to the F/A-18E/F superhornet we return to oceana in April. Just wanted to say hey.

HA! Vastroker1975, my uncle is in CA doing the same schooling and is in the same squad. as you are VFA-211. Maybe you know him, his name is Petty officer Heady!
Wish I was still on the boats. Age does catch up. 26 years that I would do all over again. I am presently in Church View, VA on Hwy 17 just north of Gloucester, VA. Currently driving an 97 F250 PS that now pulls a horse trailer and horses for weekend entertainment. I ride horses in Civil War cavalry reenactments and work a few cattle farms to keep the horses and myself exercised. I look forward to meeting all of you at the next Virginia chapter meeting.
