i had the same trouble with my 96 and i rebuilt the injection presure regulator and the problem went away.. ford wants 300 for a ipr and international wants 115 dollars.. and international also has a rebuild kit that is only 16 dollars... it consists of about 3 o-rings and a stamped steel nut.. i have the part number for that if you need it as they had a hard time finding it for me.. part # 1825806c92 . try that it might save you some bucks..
So what was the verdict???? Did you ever find out what was the cause? Just got back from a trip to california, pulled off the interstate at home and truck was running rough. Replaced fuel filter, helped some but not alot.
I still have not found the cause I have not done anymore with it since the snow flew. But it is better and very intermintent right now like once a month I notice it warm or cold motor. I am going to be changing the oil here soon, we will see if with the new oil it comes back real bad again if it does I think it might be an injector problem and will take it to the dealer under warranty.
Well I changed the oil, tore the filter apart, wiped the housing out really good with a rag, cleaned up the stem which sticks up in the filter really good, put it back together very carefully as to ensure the lower oring is in place and she fired up and hasn't sputtered since.
I have a 96 with what seems like the same issue, misses very bad when cold and after warm still misses once and a while. Dealer fix - new cam sensor, new idm, 8 differant injectors(not new but good) tests still says bad injectors and $1800 later still same problem. have done all the obvious and spent too much at dealer what next ???? how do i test the ipr, is this next ?? help
have been told to me its air bubbles in fuel line. mine does it between 1200-1400 rpms. have been reading about a fuel-tank pre-pump mod thats supposed to take care of this stutter. not much money either. i think ill give it a try this spring. keep us posted as a many of us are experiencing this same delima orr sumpm! happy huntin!
I had a mechanic put 6 quarts of oil in one of mine and it did the same thing, make sure it has enough oil. I beleive it is supposed to have 3 gallons or so.
ipr or icp gets my vote. to check to see if it is the icp unplug it and your pcm will run in default mode. also your check engine light will come on but no biggy. i know of a resource for ipr's $85 dollars. and also the occasional one on ebay for cheap. i was having a serious stuttering problem under acceleration and unplugged mine(icp) and it runs a whole lot better. and i am starting to have to crank a little longer to get her to start so the ipr is gonna get a rebuild next oil change so i can extract oil from the hpop and refill with new. good luck

Wouldn't that make your HPOP run at max pressure all the time? I'm thinking it would be hard on all the seals and the pump.

i did extensive 8 hour reading one day and did not run across that. not to say it doesn't happen but i didnt read that anywhere. i wouldn't think it would max the duty cycle out in default mode but it may very well. i know a lot of guys at another forum who ask 3000 psi out of theres all the time. so who knows. if it does wear it out i will just upgrade to a humped sd pump anyways. i dont plan to run it long like this just until i win an icp on ebay.
