I have a 04 6.0l with 22,000 on it. I wasn't aware of the 15,000 mile fuel filter changes until 19.000 miles were aleady on it. Yesterday, the water in the fuel light came on for the first time. I had to change the filters anyways, so I chose to change the filters. What a mess. Either I did something wrong or whatever, but I had diesel all over the driveway and myself when I changed the HCFM on the Frame Rail. After about an hour, I got it changes and proceeded to change the top mounted filter as well. The light is gone, but then again, a boat load of diesel was in my driveway. Does anyone have any ideas on changing the HCFM filter so that I'm not swimming in diesel in 9 months when 15,000 more miles have been racked up on my truck?

I haven't changed mine yet (it's still new...yeehaw!!), but I would drain it first, then put a catch pan under it when you change out the filter. Some folks have stated that draining the HFCM on a full tank results in more diesel being drained, possibly from siphon effect? (I'm not sure about this; haven't tried myself). If so, don't change it on a full tank.
Didn't change mine until 30,000--no water apparent, just some small flakes of ???
Light never came on. I have the 4x4 and its somewhat awkward to work around the front driveshaft, but doable. What I did: put some papers down, hoping not to have too much diesel run out; backed out the plug slowly until drip appeared; held a cup under the plug area and continued backing out the plug; it came to finger loose and was dripping regular--left it like that for 30-40 seconds, then unscrewed the plug rest of the way. Got about 10 oz of diesel into cup and it stopped dripping--don't remember how full the tank was. Replaced plug (I had purchased a second plug from Ford just in case the hex head stripped, as some have had happen--didn't need it) and tightened it back. Then, on to the filter itself--same procedure: loosen the filter cap slowly until it starts to drip, let it drip for awhile into a cup, then continue loosening until it becomes finger-loose. The drips will increase as it loosens--don't take it off completely until it almost stops dripping. When drips stop, or patience runs out, finish loosening the cap and take it off--more diesel will come out at this point and this is where the mess can occur. I got a total of less than 20 oz of diesel, and hardly had any cleanup to take care of.
Did mine at around 15K, point the nose slightly down lower than rear. Open fuel tank cap to relieve any pressure. I did top filter first. For the big one underneath, take out the water drain plug, let drain, take off the filter cap, some fuel will still drain out of here, replace filter, cap and drain plug. Turn key on for about 30 seconds. Cycle on and off about 2-4 times like this then start and go. This is what I did except the part about opening the fuel tank cap to relieve any pressure. After changing mine, I read about this on the dieselstop site, they say this will stop the siphoning effect. Nobody ever mentioned anything about tank quantity. Mine never stopped draining just changed the filter really fast to minimize the fuel leaking.
Check the tech folder and the fuel water drain procedure and fuel filter change procedure. It isn't just a reprint of the manual. It is a procedure written from experience from us who have gone through it. Take advantage of our experiences.
Thanks for the replies. Tim, I actually read the 6.0L bible prior to doing the filter change. However, I didn't see the tech folder SBV45 referred too. Your site is excellent and I'd like to say thanks for all of the great information. I'll keep these ideas in mind in another 15,000 miles.
