As I was leaving the dealership on Friday after having made what I considered to be a real good deal on an 05 F-250 and a good trade in price on my '03 Chevy Avalanche, I put the Avalanche in reverse and crashed into the dealer's large brick column or wall. Although there wasn't much damage to the wall there is a noticeable dent in the cladding or body armor on the Avalanche's bumper. My salesman came out and so did his boss to look at things. I asked what did they want to do. Maybe adjust the trade-in value or whatever and the boss man just told me to get a price on the bumper and let him know and we will decide from there. He did tell me prior to my incident that he would not be selling the Avalanche on his lot but to a Chevy dealer he had already spoken to. Doe anyone think I should just get it repaired with my $500 deductible and my insurance company or what and see what the dealer says. I was wondering if this has ever happened to Jeff with one of this customers.
I'd find the cheapest estimate possible and present it to the dealer as requested. If the dealer has a body shop, they can do the work for less than you'll pay. If they don't have a body shop, odds are they have a real good connection.
Thanks, Cowboy. I'm going to get bumper prices on Monday but knowing how crazy prices are it's probably over 1K in which case I'll probably file an insurance company claim and bite the bullet with my $500 deductible.
Thanks, JBone and no you're not. Problem is I've already done the trade with this dealer and he has placed the order for my '05 F-250 on Friday and I believe he gave me a good price for the 250 and a good trade-in allowance for my Avalanche. I feel like since he's been straight-up with me, I want to do the same with him.

Yeah, sounds like you are doing the right thing. Just get an estimate or two and let the dealer know. . . Sucks that you backed up into the brick building, but that is life. ..
Before you see your insurance company, You may want to suck it up and pay for the bumper yourself. If you file a claim with a insurance co. your rates will go up.
Lets say it cost you $500 for deductable and insurance pays $500. Your insurance will go up, how soon do you think it will take the insurance co. to get $500 bucks from you? (ps. they won't stop after getting their $500 back). Trust me, the Mrs. found this out for me the hard way

And, if the insurance claim shows up on CarFax, the dealer taking it in trade may reduce the trade-in figure. 2 identical Avalanches, one has a clean CarFax, the other shows it has "collision damage." Which one would you pay less for? CarFax definitely has its plusses and minuses.
Thanks guys. Everything is working out OK as I just got off the phone with a parts guy from Chevy and was suprised to learn that the bumper is only $242 and he can get it in one day.
I would not order the bumber yet. Call your dealer with yoru new information and see what he says. The worst that can come from it is that you pay the $242. The dealer (even though he sells Fords and not bow ties) might be abel to do better.
This is actually working out better than I hoped. The dealer just told me to get the part# and he may be able to get it cheaper and then have his guys install it for a price. I went to the local Chevy dealer and got the part# and the parts guy referred me to the body shop guy who was real nice and helpful and told me to bring the vehicle in tommorow (I was on my Harley) and he will look at it and show me how to install and if I didn't feel comfortable doing it he would give me a price. Although I am somewhat mechanically challanged, he said it is pretty simple. My stars must be in the right alignment as everything is falling nicely into place and now I'll just have to wait patiently (8-10 weeks) for my new F-250 to arrive and hope that rebates arrive with it. Thanks for all your input.
Sounds like it's going to work out well. I also vote in favor of minimal insurance claims. My wife hit a parking lot pole with the minivan, cracking the front bumper cover and denting the front quarter panel. $2000 estimate! I just bought a quarter for less than $100, and ignore the 1" crack in the bumper cover.
I don't want my insurance to go up over something relatively minor.
