How hard is the pilot bushing to replace on my 78???/ as I'm puting in a Pressure plate,Throughout bearing, and possibly the pilot bushing I have pulled the NP435 once before but is thier an easier way to take the gear shift out of the top of the tans it took me 1.5 hours and a lot of $%$% 544%$$ $%$% to push the ball down and turn it so it will get passed the pins????????
Thanks
Dustin
Dustin, go rent a pilot bearing puller from a parts store,it took me about 20 seconds to pull mine out last week.Drain the oil out of the 435.Put a floor jack under the oil pan with a block of wood to protect the pan.Loosen the bolts on the tranny to crossmember mount and jack up the tranny enough to remove the bolts and the tranny mount.Lower the engine down until the tranny is a few inches off the crossmember.Put the tranny in neutral and remove the bolts from the top cover on the 435,the tunnel cover I assume has already been removed, pull the reverse light plug and move it down to the side out of the way, note that there are two shouldered bolts in the topcover, note where they go and make sure they go back where they came from.Carefully pull the top cover off the 435 and set it in a secure area as it will break if it falls to a hard surface(personal experiance),check to see if the four smaller tips of the shift forks have the nylon caps intact,if not replace. Put some rags in over the gears to help keep it clean.Raise the jack back up enough to pull the tranny out back over the crossmember. It helps to have someone help from up inside the cab to grab the imput shaft and help you set the tranny down on the ground.I went with a LUK clutch kit and installed it today, the pedal pressure is about half of what it was with the stock clutch, this will make driving in town more pleasant.Had my Nephew help put the tranny back in today, take it easy going thru the throwout bearing as the new LUK is really snug.Leave the inspection cover off until you adjust the clutch,I set mine up so the throwout bearing was backing off the pressure plate release fingers almost a quarter of an inch then install the inspection cover and starter. It is easier to fill the tranny with oil before you put the top cover on,if you have a 4x4 like mine watch to make sure oil is not going out the tailshaft .Put the topcover on with a new gasket making sure the shift forks line up with the ring and groove in the neutral position.Jack the engine up and install the tranny mount, don't forget the wire for the reverse lights that goes on the tranny top.Check all bolts to be sure they are tightened correctly, replace any questionable u joints while you are under there.Hope this helps.

I think the most common way to get the pilot bearing out is with a slide hammer with the attatchment on it. I believe this is exactly what Nod is talking about renting. BTW, you may be better off going with a pilot bearing over the the bushing. There is a difference.
You don't need any special tools to pull the pilot bearing out. Take your grease gun and fill the end of the crank with grease. Get a socket that slip fits the bearing, put the socket on an extention, start the socket in the bearing and hit it a couple of times like you mean it and the bearing will come right out. Simple hydrolics. Then clean the excess grease out of the end of the crank and install your new bearing. Hope this helps.
