I know you need to match your steering wheel with your interior scheme... but I'm just curious.... what are you darksiders using for wheels ??? I've got the column installed and it looks just plum nekid without a wheel...
the interior will probably be either beige or gray tweed to go with the chrome yellow paint... wood ? leather ?? chrome chain ??
tell me what you guys are doing that actually have something that really move and you have to steer them.... I just push on the wheels to move mine around
and please don't show me any steering wheel pictures with fenders flames in the middle....we did that already !!!
Personal favorite... '59-'60 Chevy Impala. Has neat holes in it, tends to echo the instrument panel if you stretch your imagination some. This is a popular wheel... putting too many of them on rods and pricing them out of reality. Thus, not cool anymore.
Had a Nardi on my Fiat 1500S. There wasn't much to like about that car except for the OSCA-Maserati engine and that great wheel. It just reeked class. Don't know if it would work in a truck.
I like a little banjo for styling. Not the interpretation done by Grant or whomever the current steering wheel guy is nowadays. Thin flowing lines make a good contrast with the bulky forms of mid-fifties trucks.
Tweed is for college professors... rolls and pleats from naughas, daddio. I'm waiting for my wheel, I'll know it when I see it. himmelberg
Is this a best of 2003 highlight film tonight? As you well know, I myself prefer the C.A.G. model in body matching colors. So I take it you don't think flaming it is a good idea?
Tell us in some detail what you envision for your interior. We gotta know how much you're going to bling out the rest of it before we can offer intelligent commentary.
What are you running for a dash panel? guages? shiney switch ***** I presume? Seat cover leather or burlap. Mirrored headliner? Carpet or Rhino liner? Did you buy the triple chrome plated column we discussed? If you did, then it's all over buddy, open your wallet real wide because you gotta have a flashy wheel now. Himmel and I will pick it out for you.
For state of the art bling, I don't think anyone runs past Billet Specialties or Colorado Kustoms? They make nice stuff, it's just a little flashy for the rest of my scheme. Probably work for you. There, I self justified my C.A.G. again and saved myself another $400. That and my D.I.Y. flame job accounts for well over a thousand bucks I've made on my truck just this month. Keep it up and I'll be retired before you know it. You buying any of that?
i have a lecarra 3 spoke wheel with polished adapter and horn button, black leather wrap. something like that might interest you and maybe go with a leather wrap to match your interior.
I was ambulating in the Outlaws back forty the other day and I found another pile of former automotive type vehicles. There in the middle of the pile was an original banjo style wheel, only slightly modified by mouse chewin, shotgun shootin and the normal ravages of 50 years or so of Northern Pennsylvania weather.
I'm sure that I can let ya have that SUOS (Slightly Used Old Stock) Banjo Wheel for a mere Two Grand plus shipping and handeling. Just let me know where ta send it.
John, since you have a 53, consider getting a wheel that will allow you to mount the ford 50th anneversery horn button. I think it looks great on mne
(see gallery).
By the way, they push around the garage easier with a steering wheel so you can get um into the corners.
...and from the deep, dark recesses of the Darkside comes Butch: Butch is sporting a Billet "Banjo-style" steering wheel with the Burlwood insert (to match the burlwood console, don't cha know?). It screams, "classy, yet sassy", "vibrant, yet understated"... to all the discerning tastes in Old Truck interiors circles. It's all the buzz.... Question is: what will Butch be doning next year? Inquiring minds want to know....
We decided on the Grant 15" banjo (the one with the symetrical Y spoke arrangement, the one with the straight spokes is fugly IMHO) with leather. Most aftermarket wheels are in the 13" range, IMO too small for a fat fender. Went with leather because it never gets slippery like plastic or wood. Plastic or metal gets too hot to touch if parked in the sun here in the sunny south. I also like a wheel with a thick rim, I'm a big guy with big hands, a thin rim feels awkward and toy-like to me. Our truck is going to be driven long distances so driver comfort is very important.
John... 'fenders and I are the visual types, as you know. I think this is a classy looking wheel. Keep the ivory inserts and replace the red with a rich brown.
In the fullness of time, however, you might want to rearrange your to-do list, putting steering a bit further down and go with a side stick control, something like the fly by wire unit in our F-16's. It should be fully developed for automotive use in the near future.
helpfully, himmelberg
John, the way I see it, the steering wheel is the focal center of your interior and the horn button is the center of it all...so choose one carefully.
When I got my truck, it had the wheel I have: a real black walnut 4 spoked chrome job that I liked albeit the rest of the interior was pretty well shot. In re-doing the interior, I went with a copper/orange/wood/chrome theme as the pic will show. The dash is real cheery veneer stained just slightly darker to compliment but not necessarily match the steering wheel. I think it worked pretty good and so do the judges at car shows. The crown jewel on the wheel is a genuine hand polished laguna agate (special made by a friend of mine) in the center of the horn button . The colors on it are a blend of all the interior colors. Funny thing though, that agate's the first thing women notice at the shows for some reason. My wife says that's fine cuz then they don't notice me .
Bottom line: unless your going stock, put in a wheel that compliments your whole interior, not overtakes it.

i got a old stang wheel with the woodgrain rim and 3 spoke center, but i also like the camaro wheels from the 80's with the 4 spokes in black or red wrap that match the rim
It's a street machine , phoenix...Ya got your fuel pump, your electric kick down, electric overdrive, electric rad fan, remote start and of course, the power antenna . The single wiper and power cowl vent are in there somewhere, too.
Thinkin' about billet ***** and cherry finish this winter to match the rest of the interior.

Egad! $400 for a steering wheel? Is that the economy model? My current project requires me to simply slap some filler in the cracks and spray it with a rattle can. There are advantages to a stock restoration. Unfortunately, there are other times I've beat my head against the wall trying to find a stock replacement when I could have manufactured a custom part a lot easier.
