I have a 1996 F-150 4WD with the 300 straight that I bought new.
I am looking to get into a new vehicle and I am considering making this a project truck.
Does anyone have info on where to go for engine/tranny options for this truck given the existing equipment. In other words, engine and tranny options that won't require me to weld in new mounts and anchor points.
Ideally I'd like to keep the existing 5 speed and drop in a 351 (or larger) worked over.
Not sure where to look for compatibility or power limitations for the existing tranny, transfer case, 4wd components, etc.
You can actually build the 300 sixes to make plenty of power. And you get a truely fantastic amount of torque. I've seen one with a blower, but I think going twin turbo is a better option... Slap on a powerstroke intercooler and 400 hp isn't unreasonable.
Even going the NA route, a good (coated) header and some porting (and maybe bigger valves) take you along way.
Keep in mind that what the 300 gives up in horsepower you get back in torque.
If you are really set on going V8 IIRC the 351W and 302 will both bolt up to your tranny. You might have to change the engine mounts though.
