I just called master muffler here in ogden utah , because i want to remove my muffler and put a straight pipe in. he told me he would advise me against it because i can get a ticket for no exhaust, and also he said it wont pass inspection. is this true?
Most states have different regulations for diesel engines. You would have to check with your local authorities, unless you can find a Ute on here that already knows.
I think this is the way shops try to get money from people. He probably wanted to install a $700.00 system right? I doubt you can get a ticket for no exhaust, maybe for having loud exhaust, just don't hot rod it in the niehgborhood.
I personally wouldn't worry about it. I have had mine for over a year with no muffler and every day I see another PSD that doesn't either they're not loud at all, compared to a gaser.

Yet another reason NO ONE touches my truck but me, most shops dont have a clue. If anyone out here can tell me how no muffler will affect an emissions test please tell me cuz I feel left out.
Go for it cut the muffler out and you will love it and have No regretes.
Different jurisdictions have different laws. Some places perform a visual inspection of the emissions system, and will disqualify a vehicle from testing, or registration, until it is restored to stock condition. This could mean replacment of the catalytic convertor, or possibly the muffler, depending on their definition of OEM emissions equipment.
Here in Washington, all they do is connect an opacity meter to the end of the exhaust pipe, rev the engine three times, and measure the opacity of the smoke. In Park/Neutral, my truck doesn't smoke much, so I got a reading of 1.5%. The legal limit is 40%.
On Colorado, they actually put the truck on a dyno, and measure the smoke output under load. That would be a different story.
It's different everywhere.
Interesting Quad. Very interesting. I had never heard of the dyno thing out in Colorado before. I will be sure to never move there. Minnesota must be one of the nicer ones cuz EVERYONE chops there exhaust out up here.
If you need to pass a visual inspection, I wonder how much trouble it would be to gut a stock muffler. Better yet, I bet you could fabricate a hollow one.........

I did that to mine while I save up for the real thing. It's impossible without an air hammer to cut out the baffles. And then you have to CAREFULLY weld up the skin again.

I make dummy mufflers, really easily too. Just take a piece of 4 inch straight pipe(for example) and a plasma cutter, and cut out a 7 inch round piece out of mild steel, cut out the 4 inch center, and slide on for the ends, and then roll out a piece to make a "skin" it is really easy, and you can make them big enough it looks like a stock muffler. Just a plasma cutter and welder are required. I make big dummy ones for my dads trucks with 8 inch pipes, because 8's are quiet in the first place, and actually quieter with 8's and a muffler than OEM.

Must be a big rig.
yupp, I have an 84 EXHD 359 with a 3408, I have been driving it some, but it needs just a little be to be totally finished(excluding paint) My dad has his "show truck" missed the shell calender in 1992 by just a little bit, dollar bill green, 280 wb, 8's, two taylor wings, sharp lookin truck. oops, went a little overboard to meet the BS 10 charachter minimum.
