Ford IFS
My truck (1994 F-250 IDI TD) has a 50 in the front. It is cast right into the housing. My wheels angle out at the top (too much camber), it has been in and out of the alignment shop many times and they insist that the alignment is correct, but it is wearing the out side edge of the tire out really quickly. Once I move and have my tools out of storage I hope to try to adjust the camber my self. I doubt I could make it worse.
mine do the same i also plow snow. iam just going to get a solid axle this spring. hope it lasts one more year with the plow on it. i alwasy take it realy easy and i have never broken anything but it dont stay in aligment worth a darn at all.
If you guys are checking alignment after you have backed the truck up then they will look like the top of the tires are tipped in.This is normal for the ifs.Just back it up a few feet and get out and look at the wheels, then get back in and drive ahead a few feet, get out and look again,i am sure you will see a big difference.
I have had the 50 ifs on a 3/4 ton plow package and had it break right where the u-bolts go onto the housing. In fact i have seen 3 of them broken in the same place.Aparently that is one of the weak points on them, and its always the same side that does break.
The hubs are 4 inches across, where as the 44's are 3 1/4 across.

Some beach, I checked my hubs and I have a D44. I dont plow snow so I hope I should be fine.
Why didnt ford just put a solid front axle on these things? The IFS doesnt make any smoother ride with leaf springs anyway.

I have the IFS in the front end of my 86 F-250, 4X4 and it has not caused me many problems. I put cambushings in it not that long ago and fixed the wheel tilt problem. I have a Dana 60 front end that I was going to put under it bt have decided not to. It is for sale if your interested, also have matching rearend. They came out of a 86 F-350 single wheel!
Dave,
Yes They Do Sag Due To Weight, But Wear Also Makes Them Sag. Along With That, A Lift Kit Installed Without Replacing The Center Cross Member Bracket Can Also Cause Failure. The Ifs Was In Alot Of F350's And Duallies From '80-'93 Or So. Is Your F250 Considered A LiGHT Duty? Under 8000#? Sorry I Just Assumed That Anything With A Diesel Had The 50.

I have never seen an ifs in a f-350,as least not in a 4x4.Never really took any notice on the 2 wheelers.

If you see a camber change going fwd and back, check the bushing on the axle inboard ends and also the inner axle to frame brackets. I had a problem like that on a 95. The only way to see it was to lie underneath and have someone move it back and forth a couple feet. The brackets were cracked and flexing. Don
Ranchhand my truck is the '86 F250 HD with 8800 GVW. Everything is heavy duty except the front axle. When I go for parts if they show three items that may fit, the biggest one is always the right one. The front axle uses '86 Bronco parts just fine.
Here in WV I have seen many mid 80 diesels with the 44 and many mid 80 gassers with the 50. Figure that one out.
I have not broken the housing yet, but I have broken just about every other part in the 44 except the ring gear and pinion. I hope I get the 60 under mine before something else breaks.
The two wheel drive F350's have IFS coil spring front axles under them. I just bought one for the rear dually axle.
Dazedandconfused how much do you want for your 60?

Well my book only goes from 1987-1996 and it lists a d60 for every year F-350 4x4.Like i said im not familiar with the 2wd,however i am with the 4x4,and i dont need to look at any more than i have already owned up through the years.Up untill 1979 all 4x4 ford trucks had a straight axle, right down to the 1/2 ton.I still stand on my original statement that i have never seen a IFS F-350 4x4.My book doesnt show one.It does show 2wd F-350's with IFS.BTW,i would have read your response even if you never had the CAP LOCKS on.

I bet if you do like i said backing up,get out and look, then drive ahead, get out and look again, you will see a difference, even if everything is new. They do that right off the lot, brand new.So anyone here who parks there truck by backing it in is going to see an exagerated effect on the front end.All i can say is try it and you will see what im saying. What is even more freaky is stand in front of the truck and get your buddy to move it back and forth.
And you guys with a plow attached will see it big time.
