I was wondering if any of you knew where a good place to find a full flip front for my 53 f100....its kinda been decided, im goin to switch it from a 3/4 ton to a half ton, and have to buy the back fenders anyway. If i buy the back, i might as well buy the front too....if i buy the front, i might as well look into the full flip front....funny how everything is connected isnt it?
Hey there, huron, Sacramento Vintage Ford carries them...not cheap, tho. I was thinking about one for my 54 f350 (you know, the one with the 9' box!) And I see a few threads down where John Niolon put a link to his mighty conquest of installing a tilt front...complete with power actuator!
One thing about doing these old trucks: when you get all done you'll have a pile of old parts in the corner of the shed big enough to build another old truck !!
Norb
Norb, with all the parts ones left in the yard, ive got enough for me to build at least 2 more, and my old man to redo his....theres stuff layin around as it is:P...thanx tho, ill check into the front, probably is more than i feel like spendin...but we'll see
jniolon has a great site for tilt istallation very usefull.But...It ends with , the next step will be attaching and finishing the side pieces of the fenders, more to come. I must have missed the 2nd. part. Is it out there?
it's out there..... somewhere in the next couple of years.... trying to get frame ready for paint... right now mounting up the radiator, once that's done we can take it all back apart and paint the frame.... fitting up the hood might come next and the end of the article... If I could get things to move 'slow" I'd speed up this progress considerable... sometimes weeks with not a thing done..
i got my tilt front end fitted and done, i will never do another one ever again.
they are a pain to fit right. plus attaching the rear of the front fenders. and dont
forget about figuring out a way to latch the dang thing. all i can say is good luck....
your's turned out great... nice work on the lower fenders... what are you using for lift... hydraulic ?? electric ?? armstrong ??...
I'm thinking about latching even now and I think the elect. actuators will hold it down fine. I plan on some guide pins in the lower fenders to hold down the flapping but I think the actuators will snug it down tight at the cowl.
did you insert some type of form in the hood to hold to the shape of the cowl ?? My plan is to either make a pattern with plywood or bend up a metal tube to hold the shape then glass it into the hood itself... whatcha think ?
john, i have an electric actuator on both sides. i did the front brackets like yours.
and no the actuators dont hold the front end down good enough. about an inch of play. what i did was cut two small little slits in the cowl one on each side. then i formed in a small piece of 1/8th inch flat bar on the underside of the hood. when the hood comes down it stops, then slides back towards the cab about a 1/4 of an inch. those two little pieces of flat bar slide right into the slits and woola.latched...
when the hoods up you dont even notice the slits or the flat bar, they only stick out about 1/4 of an inch. it was the only way i could think of latching it. and it only took me ayear to come up with.
also yeah i had so cut the fiberglass brace out,set the hood down on the cowl and put to bags of sand on each side, crawl under the hood and brace it up with 1 inch metal tubing. then fiberglass it all back up...yeahhh!
That tilt front end is the catsazz! When you get the front end does it come with the front fender pieces you have mounted to the cab? Excellent job by the way!

Shaun,
hmmmm my actuators pull down pretty tight...but I'll take your word... my flip is still very weak from removing alll the internals It's hard to say now... I plan the internal bracing much like you did also...
do you have any pics of the 'latches' I'm having a hard time visualizing how your hood 'slides' back...are you using simple pivot point hinges like mine ??? mine arc's down right onto the cowl with no rearward movement ?
