My 1988 2.9L Ranger with 140,000 miles runs great most of the time. However, every once in a while the engine will start to "chug" and spew black smoke for about ten seconds, then it will snap out of it and run fine. I've replaced the o2, coolant temp, charge air temp, and throttle position sensors all to no avail. The check engine light does not come-on. I self-diagnosed it and came up with 2 koeo codes-----67 & 41. 67 is not listed in my manuel, 41 is, and says o2 sensor reading lean, Henceforth the inconsistent yet highly rich fuel mixture. What would cause this to happen intermittently, and not all the time? Better yet, what would even cause this? Oh....I almost forgot.....new fuel tank, high and low pressure pumps, air filter, plugs, wires.
I feel your pain, thats the same thing mine was doing, i replaced everything...technician at wits end...it would run beautifuly for awhile then all of a sudden it would slow down and puke out black smoke, i had an 86, i finally ended up selling it...good luck in finding the elusive problem.
Pull the vacume line off the fuel preasure regulator if you have any fuel in there then the regulator is bad or going bad thats what mine was doing before it completely craped out.
Thanks for the in-put guys. I started checking my manual and it said the MAP sensor controls fuel delivery and ignition timing. Since the MAP sensor was the only one I didn't replace, I replaced it. The truck runs fine now, I took it for a good long ride and it didn't miss a beat. I love my old 88 Ranger. Now I want one of them new Mustangs. Are they awesome, or what?
