Well I put a K&N filter in the other day and I want to say I can really tell a BIG difference in not only sound but performance. It sure feels a little more peppier than before and sounds a little more throaty but my final results are not tallied yet.
I want to install either the Airraid or Volant intake but with so many problems still existing with them I do NOT want to hassle with it as of yet!
Anyone else notice a difference with just the K&N Air FIlter?

Supposedly Airaid has taken care of their issues and are currently or soon will be shipping the new version.
I haven't decided on an intake yet, or just the K&N. However...My wife and I have a Jeep Liberty and the first thing I did when we bought it was to head down the local auto place and order a K&N. We had it in there about a year and I had completely forgot that I had replaced it. My wife's mother has an identical KJ (all the way down to the color). Anyway long story short; MY mother drove one of the KJ's within about 30 minutes of driving the other and asked me if our Jeep had a different engine than the in-law's. "It sounded different."
It took me about a week of thinking about it to figure that she was hearing the air flow from the K&N. IMHO a simple drop in K&N is woth the money, but I had a K&N CAI on my Jetta, and that is a whole different story...

You got those Bushwacker flares installed yet BlkButy? I'm interested to see what those will look like, as our trucks are almost twins.
I am looking for one for my 04, 4 X 4, 5.4 Lariat. What's the best place (online) to go? I see them for Lightening, Heritage and F150 though no mention on the Lariat model.
Installed the K&N a couple of days ago. I have not noticed any change in the sound but the engine is a little more responsive.
My experience with the Airaid:
I installed the Airaid intake on my 97 Dakota and only noticed a large increase in the amount of noise from under the hood. There was not any increase in the power. Granted, my Dakota was the biggest pile of junk I have ever owned. You should only take this as one person's experience, but I thought it was waste of money. If you do install the Airaid on your F150 and it does make a difference please let me know.

Explain please?? Did you buy the K & N that fits into original filter slot??
See I have a hard time believing Ford or any other manuf would leave 10-15hp laying on the table because of not molding a plastic air intake the right way....Let alone buying filters that would restrict engine horsepower..
Sorry, but I grew up with Cobra Jet Ram Induction on Mustang Mach I's and Boss's and it never added 2hp to anything it was on..
i think its because these filters need regular cleaning and oiling. if they put them in stock most people arent ever going to clean them and its going to let in dirt etc. leading to engine damage, and everyone is going to blame their car's problems on the manufacturer instead of themselves. they are also a little louder. these things only work best with a new exhaust anyways, especially the cone intakes.
Here's an interesting article on the situation: http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm It seems to me the best combination would be a WiX filter. It allows almost as much air as the K&N but filters better. And you don't have to maintain it. Plus if you do some really good searching you can find it for great prices. I want to get one ASAP to see if it would make a noticable difference over stock. I only have 5500 miles on my truck and the stock still looks real good, so I should notice it if it is different.
