Talking Tachometer Question

I have a 94' F150 5.8L and now that i have a decent amount of engine mods, id like to throw a nice 5" tach on the dash. However, i have a factory tach as well. Does anyone make a block off plate for the factory tach? I could just disconnect it i suppose, but that probably would be half-a**. lol i kinda wish i didnt have a tach so i could have an excuse to throw a monster tach in there. Ah well, just a thought. Let me know any ideas. Thanks guys.

I have an Idea... I'll swap my instrument cluster in my 92 without a tach for your cluster with a tach. I have been searching for one anyway. Also, It's my understanding that the original speedo can be swapped between the two so the mileage remains the same... Then you will not have to hide the stock tach

That would work, just change the speedo part of the cluster to retain your own calibration settings and odometer readings.

yeah, i could just switch them. How hard is it to pull the factory one out and put the new one in? What does the cluster inlcude when i actually get it out? Im not sure if the lighting will work becasue i think the bulb placement is different for the differnt clusters.

My cluster is in perfect shape (like my truck). If I understand it correctly you would have to remove the speedometer after removing the instrument cluster and keep that part (I have to do the same) and after getting the new cluster install your speedo into the "new" cluster (vise-versa for me). The speedo is what maintains the mileage.

Maybe MustangGt can clarify this for me?

Just to give you another option:

I have a '94 instrument cluster without the tach and would be willing to do a swap, too. I don't know if you guys can get away with a '92-'94 swap. You might want to read the tech article about the swap. It tells you what is involved in making the change, and mentions that there may be slight differences between years. I know from experience that the '94's are plug-n-play. The only thing I would add to the tech article is that you should probably wear an antistatic wrist band when handling the instrument cluster because it and the actual instrument modules (speedo, gauges, etc.) are subject to damage from small static discharges.

Let me know if you want to swap clusters and we can work out the details.

I did read the article, and I was just trying to save you guys some trouble. It says, and I quote, "It is best to get a cluster from the same year of truck as there are some minor changes across the years. (volt gauge wiring, ABS light)"

It would suck to get your cluster out, ship it to someone, and then find out the wiring was different when you tried to do the swap. If you look through the posts you will also see some guys that have had problems with the volt gauge when doing the swap due to using a cluster from a different year.

I can testify that the swap works if the year of your truck and the instrument cluster you try to swap in are the same, because the reason I have the extra '94 instrument cluster without the tach is that I just swapped mine for one with a tach, retaining my speedo module. It worked like a charm.

I am a little confused however.........at first you said that you wanted to swap with me, and then you said the swap worked like a charm because you had done it before and had an extra cluster. I probably just missed something. Thanks again
