Shocks

My 2000 has over 60,000 miles on the original shocks and seems to lean alot on curves and have more body roll and bounce than it should. I am sure that these would be good signs that they need replaced. My question is which shocks? I don't feel that I can afford high dollar performance shocks, and I am not sure that they are even necessary. I have been told that too big of a shock would give a rough ride. I do most of my driving on pavement with some on dirt roads. I have seen Monroe and Gabriel at the local part stores for $18 ea. Would these be adequate? If it doesen't show, I have no idea what to look for. What would be my best bet on shocks? Thanks.

the monroe sensatrac seems to be the popular middle of the line up shock, for around 35$ ea, i have bought 3 sets and have no complaints. my only problem is this short wheel base reg. cab '01 is just not very smooth because of the short w.b. and no weight in the rear. but it is a truck, not like my wives g. marquis. if you were thinking about selling your truck, you might want to put some low$ shock on it. Gabriel sells a lot of low $ shocks, i can't see a $18 shock lasting very long. Worn out shocks can be dangerous....good luck..pr

I just bought a pair of Rancho RS5000's for $89 w/ free shipping from Central 4WD. They are only about $9 more than the Monroes and are probably a better shock for a light truck. I'm probably going to try to put mine on this evening.

What all do I need to consider before buying a set of shocks? What do you gain by using the high dollar ones over factory replacements? Like I said, I'm clueless. Thanks.

if you don't do any off roading i would just stay with std type replacements. i personnally haven't bought any of the highdollar shocks, but the problem is that if you spend extra $$$ and are not happy, i seriously doubt you could take them back. kind of like performance mufflers. once welded in place , your stuck with it. Yes it would be very nice to "try out" a particular brand before buying. I typically think that the high dollar shock is prob. going to be a bit more heavy duty, a better quality shock, but you will probably sacrifice ride comfort. I hear good comments about the Belstiens but i don't know if they make a "std" oem replacement one for normal highway use. i would buy a set if i knew they would smooth out my short wheelbase f150. my $.02.

I have Edelbrock IAS shocks. They are expensive at around $70-80/shock.
It is without question the most effective and noticable of all the performance mods that I have done to my truck. They GREATLY reduced the body roll during hard cornering compared to the stock shocks. I replaced my factory shocks only a few months after I bought my truck brand new. I still remember my dismay at their poor quality. The OEM shocks were partially rusted, dented up, leaking oil, and were VERY soft in terms of dampening. The Edelbrocks were extremely high quality in comparison and still work great after almost 6 years of use. I'm sure you can't go wrong with Bilsteins either.

Fro the best on and offroad ride quality go with a bilstein. THey have a different model for 2wd and 4wd rangers. Around $250 for a set of 4 from shox.com I just put these on my 2000 4wd and love them.

Bilstien DOES have OEM replacements. Same lengths and stuff, they bolt right up. I have heard good things about the Edelbrocks too.

I've been REALLY happy with my Rancho RSX shocks. They were reasonable at $50ish per shock installed.

I highly recommend Bilsteins.....changed the original shocks at 36K miles, and the Bilsteins made a big difference in ride and handling....

Which Bilsteins are you guys buying?? They make a couple of different types from what I can tell. Are they the OE replacement ones?? Their site shows 3 types, but I doubt you guys are running remote reservoir shocks, LOL!

Edit: oh wait, looks like the 5100s are for lifted trucks only.

Bilsteins & Edelbrocks are very good. $ for $ I would check out KYB Gas - a - just at performance suspension technology (web site), they sell 4 shocks including shipping for $129. If you want alittle more stiffness then the gas-a-just will do you fine, if you want a more OEM ride with IAS valving then the KYB GR2's will do you well. They come with a lifetime warranty and I have used their shocks/struts on everything from my 65 shelby, wifes 97 Cougar sport (V8) and 1990 F150 w/Handling package. Never had one fail to this day.
