You don't really need to do either one. The truck performs fine stock and the gain per dollar spent doesn't really justify making the mods.

If you want to improve the performance more drastically, get one of the tuners like the Superchips Microtuner or the Predator.

If you must make an exhaust mod, I would consider doing just the Cat back and not the Turbo back or at least leave the Cat in if you do a turbo back. The Cat delete hasn't been shown to make that much of an improvement if any and is against Federal law to boot.

It has been suggested by many here who have spent much time talking with Ford service reps that you do need the back pressure for the turbo on the 6.0 to operate properly.
I would agree with Darylhunter that if you do change the exhaust stick with CAT back.

I went with the cat-back on my 03. I would rather ber safe than sorry and that is what my dealer told me. I keep reading that the turbo on the 6.0L requires a certain amount of back pressure, espicially when towing. I tow a 8000 lb TT and I use the Predator in the heavy tow mode and the truck runs awsome. The Cat-Back Hog Exhaust gets my vote.

The gain per dollar spent does not justify the purchase. Lowering EGT's by well over 100 degrees does. I would not have done any of the enhancements you have done without at least a Cat back system. Plus, the exhaust systems are cheap and easy to put on compared to a possible burned up motor.

Again, if the EGTs are too high pulling only 3000 lb, then there is something else wrong with the truck that needs to be looked at.

I've got an '03 with the massively restrictive down pipe and totally stock exhaust system. The highest EGT I ever recorded while pulling the trailer up 8%+ grades was something like 1173 F preturbo with no tuner installed.

I saw a high of 1243 F for just a couple seconds on the Tow Safe tune while pulling back on to the road from a turnout while on the way home from Big Bear. This was in 1st or 2nd gear with my foot nearly on the floor (lifted a tad to limit wheelspin). As soon as the truck was getting good traction I mashed it back down to the floor and the EGTs never topped more than about 1170 F.

Using the Economy tune on the last trip to Borrego Springs and back a couple weeks ago the max EGT was less than 1150 F.

This is with a 10,000 lb trailer. With a 3000 lb trailer there is just no way that the EGTs should be getting high enough to justify any exhaust system work IMO.

Daryl,

I agree with you about the 3000 lb trailer but I think you are asking for trouble if you don't change the highly restrictive Muffler on the stock exhaust system. I think the rest of the exhaust system including the downpipe is not that big of a change but the muffler is definitely restrictive. I have done it all in steps and noticed a difference.

I agree the mufler is IMO the worst part of the system and that does make a difference.

I had a stainless Magnaflow muffler welded into my stock system for about $350.00. I'm not certain it added much in the way of horsepower... but it certainly sounds better. Dan

Ok, for those of you who have done a CAT back or a muffler replacement, have you been able to see a reduction in EGT after the change? I am pushing 1225 on a fully stock truck pulling my trailer (8000lbs), and am looking to lower it.
