I've been a Ford truck enthusiast since '72 and, in general, have had terrrific service from Ford vehicles. I have an '04 with 8500 miles. The throttle response is sluggish, the limited slip clutch packs were replaced at 3000 mi and the transmission reverse gear is not strong enough to back my 2500 lb boat/trailer up my driveway wiithout putting it into low range. I've never had a truck that couldn't back the boat up the drive until now. After having it stink while backing up my ATV trailer (1000 lbs) for about 50 yards on level ground, I took it in to the service department. I've since learned the transmission will be fully replaced. Great driveline guys! It does not inspire confidence.
If someone from Ford would care to contact me, I would be happy to discuss the problems with them.
I have a 04 4.6 2wd and I tow a 5500 lbs boat plus trailer without a problem, forward and backward. A 2500 lbs boat should be nothing behind these trucks...heck it's nothing behind a Ranger.

Yeah, this is a 5.4, 4X4...should do a heck of a lot better. I want my '99 back.
This is certainly not normal for any V8 truck I'd say. Hate to say it, but perhaps there are serious enough issues to send this one back. What amazes me most is that many of the problems you hear about are from trucks put out long after the initial launch. I have a very early production '04 (from 09/03) and it has been flawless so far at 3200 miles. Good luck.

Thanks, I bought the truck on 11/29/03 so it is relatively early production but very low miles. The factory wants the tranny so I'm guessing they are seeing some issues crop up. Better now than at 37,000 miles. I'm documenting. J
It sounds like they're trying to make things right. Will the transmission be replaced under warranty?
Yup, total swap. They wouldn't let the tranny mechanic even open it...Ford wanted it exactly as it comes out of the truck. My understanding is that it is a modified AOD rather than the heavier E4OD. Good thinking...add a bunch of weight to the truck, increase the HP and switch to a lighter tranny. Never had a problem with the E4OD in my '99. I wonder if they'll let me know what went wrong? Right! I think it was bad from the gitgo...just took a little while to fry it. The fluid smelled pretty burnt.
The tranny is basically the same as what's been used for the past few years in the F150s. It's just upgraded to handle the extra 5.4L torque and the drive by wire stuff. I understand that the 4R75E in the 2004 F150 is sealed so as not to be repaired but replaced, but I'm not sure.
In any event, you just got a bad one and it sounds like they are going to fix the problem.
Hey mountain man you keep that funny stuff up. That was very funny, some just have no sense of humor. If it would have been my truck I still would think that was some funny. And I have had 4 ring and pinion gears and one full rearend assembly in mine within 6K miles along with many other problems, many more than that guy and Iam still
