64 I6 swap to ??

Just bought a 64 F-100 from the local wrecker. He wanted an extra $500 for the I6 and tranny so I didn't take the motor/trans. He let me take the truck but I have to return the motor and tranny.
I was thinking of putting in a motor/trans I have from around the yard. Need some opinions. This will be a low buck casual driver. I'll replace kingpins but probably leave manual steering and drums, just give them some TLC.
My options: 352 from a 65 F100. 6cyl from mid 80's Mustang or a 460 from a 72 Lincon Mark ?.
Probably none of these will bolt up in the front. I can get crossmembers and original motor mounts from all these vehicles for the tranny to mount. Are any of these easier/harder to mount? What can I mount without too much motor mount fabrication? Or are these options not worth the effort?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

This is diffucult. The 352 was not offered until 65, so your the 352 will not bolt up easily. I would put the 460 in myself, no matter what you put in it will require significiant modifications.

That's kinda what I thought. I know Tiremine has put a 460 in his, with a different Oilpan. Hopefully he or someone who has done a swap into pre 65 truck will chime in. With a 460 I will probably have clearance issues with steering box and exaust at passinger side frame.

The way I figure, you proably have to do the same amount of work no matter what engine you go with, so may as well put the biggest baddest one ya got in.

I recommend to check with local truck enthusiast in your area and swap for a 300 cid since you stated a Low buck driver; the 460 is awesome choice but for casual driver I wouldn't agree. To bad your so far away I got a good 300 I've pulled out of my 65. Would love to have a 352 of the same quality..

To swap or not to swap?

66MM,
there are several vendors out there that offer crossmembers for several of those swaps. Try Speedway Motors, D.Carpenter, and Autokrafters to name a few. Most of the ones I've seen are actually made by TransDapt. That's what I used on my 64 when I put a 302/C-4 in a few years back.

Good luck, Phil

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/xq/asp...st_display.htm

Here's the numbers for the 460 swap. I had them handy.
Try Speedway Motors (#7209313), or TransDapt (#4685 & 9413), Autokrafters and some others.

==================================================
TransDapt for smallblocks:

# 4145 to put a 289-351W into a 53-64 truck

# 4539 tranny cross member.

I have a 460 in my 64 swb.....71 block.....was cautioned against the 72's...seems they did some head work...compression lowering....which made the already hungry engine less potent without improving performance. As for the conversion, if you're adept with a gas and stick welder....the front sump Lincoln with the c-6 can be tweaked in. I set my engine 1-1/2" off-center to the passengers side and forward enough so the tranny kickdown linkage could function. BTW....the rear engine compartment crossmember has to be removed...it's just rivetted in so that's no big deal.

If you're truly into a low budget conversion I'd look into something with less cubic inches and front end weight. You can take a look at my gallery to see how a low budget project gets out of control. Just my $.02.

Thanks for the help guys. FLAF100/460 I have been admiring your gallery and engineering work for a week or so. Nicely done! I like the turn signals, and I have a late 80's mustang, I may use some of your ideas. I have done a 460 swap into a 1980 F-100 and may do it still, but will likely try and keep it smaller. Possibly I can get the 300 back that I took out of my 80. I gave it to my dad to put in his swather. I may also buy the I6 that is in the truck if I can talk the guy down and if I can get it running and make it a floor shift. Thanks Customcab 4x4 for the numbers I have a 65 and a 66 that may some day get a 460.

Mercman,
For a low buck casual driver I have to agree with some of the others. The 460 might be too much. Don't get me wrong, it's a blast to drive but that much weight on the front -w-out power steering is a handful. With gas as high as it is I'm glad I don't have to drive it everyday. Also remember I'm probably putting about 5 times the torque on the frame than it was designed to handle. I've got a picture from the dragstrip that shows how much things bend at launch. (scary) I'll try to post it in my gallery

Mercman,

I just completed the removal of a 223 ci from my '62 F250 and the installation of a 'enhanced' 300 ci I6. Its a great engine, tons of low end torque, very smooth, and much better gas mileage then you would ever see with the 460. It did require some engine mount mods that you would not have to do but the result I am very happy with. Look up the Clifford Performance web site 6=8, lots of good info there. I would get the 300 from your dealer.
Good Luck, Mike

Thanks for all the input guys.
Tiremine, When you flipped your front axle to the top of the springs did you have any issues with steering geometry ? Did you have to notch the frame?
Thanks.

I don't think it changes the geometry. (with the disclaimer that I am not a front end alignment mechanic) The reason I say this is, if you think about it I'm not changing the tires position on the ground. All it does is lower the trucks height. I didn't notch the frame although it doesn't leave much clearance. Probably would if I was going to leave it down all the time.

Added a picture to my gallery from the dragstrip. You can see what that much torque can do to the frame. I probably need to quit before I break something....

Yikes, that really does flex. I wouldn't quit racing, but I would consider boxing the frame and/or adding a 4 link. Depends what you plan to do with it I guess.
Your truck and your pics are a motivation. Thanks.
