I have a 65 f100 with a 240 and 4sp. The motor overheats. My dad has a mid 80's E150 Conversion van he's using as rolling storage. It has 302 and auto. He only paid $100. I was thinking of doing a motor/trans swap. What parts do I need to use off the van? What other parts can I use off the van? How difficult of a swap would it be?
I would really check out why your 6 is heating up, could be a LOT less hassle to pull the radiator and have it rodded out, new water pump and thermostat and stay with what you have. Or see if your local rad. shop has an old V8 rad. for it. I went from a 352 to a 300 I6, kept my V8 rad. and had them move the outlet over for the I6. Just me but I would stick with your 6 and do some general maint. on it and freshen it up, might be money better spent in the long run. (from what I have experienced!!
If have not already done so, want to welcome you to FTE.
Also have a 65 F100 and swapped the 240ci for 70 Torino 302, kept the T18 4speed. If decide to go w/ the 302 you will need the engine perch. the brackets that are attached to frame the insulators set in. Do not know if the 80 E150 perches are interchangeable; kinda doubt it, insulators may be same, and you will need the 302 fllywheel. I set the engine in the compartent to desired position with the power trane attached and found 2 of the 3 holes on the perch match the original perch holes and had to drill the 3rd. Not sure about the auto tranny swap, suggest take measurement to determine if your going to have to shorten the drive shaft. A quik fix would be to install the original bell housing and 4 speed. Had a simular heating problem once and found the thermostat was stuck closed. Could check by placing thermostat in pan of water then bring to boil to see what temp. it opens, or if it opens. As pickupman indicated, should flush radiator. Anyhow, had a urge to add my $.02. Again welcome

The 65 van was never offered with a V-8. I have seen lots of these converted and usually the biggest problem they have to overcome is cooling that V-8 in such a small space. Most of the ones that I saw that were successful had cut the floor in front of the engine cover and made a tunnel for air to get to the radiator. There will be lots of fabrication involved for the engine and transmission mounts and making an air tunnel.
Wow John, somehow I read E100 in that post. My bad!
If he uses that 302 from a van, he will have to change the oilpan and pump pickup tube. The van has a rear sump. My son's 63 has the 5.0 from a 86 E150 van. We also used the radiator from the van but had to reverse the mounting brackets from side to side. If it is from the mid-80's, it probably has an AOD behind it like ours. We used a Lokar kickdown cable to control the AOD. Without it, the transmission will only last a couple hundred miles.
Sorry for not replying. I've been busy at work now that the weather is finally nice.
jowilker- 1.I've done engine swaps in vehicles of the "other brand" (chevy). And just recently did a blower swap on my brother-in-law's '03 Cobra Conv. Nice working on a new car, no rust.
2. The van was bought from a relative that was moving and didn't have room for it.
3. The pickup I bought from my father-in-law who let his son use it. Didn't take very good care of it. Hit a deer with it and wrecked the rad. Replaced it but after that it never ran right again. Overheated.
pickupmanx- With the price of gas that could actually be a good idea. But I still like the idea of a V8.
daveengelson- Thanks for the information. May be leaning toward working on the 240.
truckfarmer- It's a 80's van. Sorry about the confusion.
Again, thanks to all for the info. It is appreciated. Will probably check into getting the 240 running.
the difference is the stroke. you have to measure the stroke and the longer one is the 240 I dont have my manual at the house at the moment or i would give you the measurement for both. I used a straw with the plug out and measured mine. wanted to make sure it had not been changed
What is the difference between the 240 and 300? Mine is out of a 74 f150.
1974 was the last year for a 240. Both the 240 and the 300 were available in 1974. If you believe your engine to be original, the 4th digit in the VIN is the engine size code. (sample: F15Bxxxxxxx)
