Question Engine Block Heater........What else does it keep warm?

Alright.....this is a question for those diesel mechanics that have knowledge of this! I know that the engine block heater.....well....heats the engine block and coolant during cold temperatures BUT...does it heat the engine oil so that it flows faster on cold-temp. start-ups? You would think that these trucks are built this way! I don't like knowing that there is "essentially" metal to metal on cold morning start-up while the 15-40 is still trying to make its way through the high press. oil pump, up into the engine. Tell me what you know and what you think? Should I purchase an additional heating pad to heat my engine oil pan for better cold weather flow?

It heats the coolant in that part of the engine block, which should flow around to other places a little bit due to convection. So it doesn't directly heat the oil, and probably doesn't indirectly heat it much either, since it mostly sits below the block when the engine is off. (I guess the stuff trapped in the high pressure reservoir might get warm?)

Folks in really really cold climates (Alaska) do indeed put oil pan heaters on their engines. If you're in most of the continental US it's not really necessary.

Just curious, but does the heated fuel return function when the beasts are plugged in? If not, does anyone know of someone making something for that to work?

No, that's only turned on when the key is turned on. You really need to have fuel that won't gel at the prevailing temps and not depend on fuel heaters to do that for you, because they can only work on a little bit of fuel at a time. They basically make sure that the fuel doesn't thicken up and clog the tiny filter pores, but there's a whole lot of other places for fuel to get cold in that system. And someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a lot of the fuel-gelling situations happen at road speed, where the flowing air sucks the heat out of the fuel as it is running in pipes under the truck... rather than while the truck is sitting overnight. So the truck will start and then starve for fuel as you head down the road.
