'98 Expy Starter/Bendix Issue - Help

My '98 Expy Eddie Bauer has, on two recent occassions, made a metal grinding noise when I try to start the engine. I'm positive it is coming from the starter. I've read several postings on starters and was wondering if I should pull the starter and inspect the bendix and lubricate it (since it appears the bendix isn't fully engaging the fly wheel) and reinstall the starter or should I just go ahead and replace the starter? I have approximately 125,000 miles and I believe it is the original starter (not sure since I'm the second owner). Thanks in advance for your recommendations/suggestions!

Wolfpacker ........... it's not going to get any better on it's own. In the long run it would probably be best just to pull it and confirm the chewed up BENDIX drive and replace the whole starter with a remanufactured one ........ this will ensure that the contacts are clean and the brushes are serviceable as well.

That way you can put off thinking about it for awhile.
