how many of y'all use instant messengers other than to talk to close friends and family? and how many of you run across someone you think you might have in common with someone and send a nice polite greeting only to have the door slammed in your face without so much as a why.
is everyone out there that uses them that paranoid? heck if ya walk into any joint and act like that you wouldnt get very far in my thinking.
please understand this did NOT happen to me from anyone on FTE... yet.
Ive had messenger for years now to talk to my close family and anyone else that will, but after the abouve happening again it brought the thought back again. give your thoughts and feelings on the matter because it seems as if they are only used for known friends and not for finding new ones. there that might make this make more since. any thoughts?
I use Msn Messenger to talk to friends online. But I use ICQ to talk to family and chat via cam. I just think ICQ is a better and easier program for my parents to use while they chat with me and there grandson online.
I used to talk all the time on AOL and AIM but school and work limits that. But it isn't like I miss it.
Friends, please be careful of the potential danger of ICQ. Unless you know how to successfully monitor the activity of your internet connection and ports you are using, you have a severe security risk, and a firewall will not protect you under these circumstances.
I have used MSN and Yahoo messenger. For the most part, I have talked to family, but once or twice I have had a friend or two as a contact. It can be very invasive to have someone pop up and start chatting every time that you go online. You will end up wasting an hour, and forget why that you even got online to begin with. Sometimes you just don't want to be bothered, or you just don't feel to chatty. If you don't elect to block "all other users" you may even receive un-solicited invitations to be a contact.
There is one IM called Trillian which is supposed to work on Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and AOL.
I use Yahoo, MSN ,and ICQ. ICQ is a lot safer now than it was in the past. I'm embedded behind 3 firewalls so I really have no worries anyway.
Someone's paranoid. Next he'll be setting up PGP on his computer - and after that Linux!
Sorry...I'm stuck behind my school's which wreaks havoc on my file-sharing capacities...luckily Edonkey2000 gets through. 250KB/s uploaded....barely a trickle on the download side lol. Doesn't seem to like me...oh well. Spend the rest of my processor time running SETI@Home.
I use AIM, Yahoo, MSN. ICQ is a pain..and Trillian liked to lock on me, and messed up my groups on everything. Was nice to have 15MB of RAM running my messengers instead of 46 Peak (31 off peak) MB of RAM usage. Yahoo's latest is a pain about that....and even though I'm packing 512 - that's still ram that could be used =P.
I already have linux installed on my OTHER hard drive.... I'm on a wireless connection, behind my software firewall, which is behind the router's firewall, behind Norton, on the controlling computer. Plus whatever the cable company is using....... This seems nuts, but my uncle (where I'm living) whines when the back door is unlocked for 5 minutes when we go to the store. He's a security nut, yet doesn't see the need to remove spyware...... Some people are just crazy. I have to shut down the new yahoo to boot windows. It's the worst version yet. BTW I'm running an AMD athlon XP1700+, 512 megs ram....
I have the capability to "talk" on AIM but not many people want to actuallu voice talk.
It has been a couple of years since I tried to use AIM and couldn't log on in my name, last time I tried but I can use my wifes.
I used to use the Yahoo chat when I spent a bunch of time on Yahoo games. Got some bugs that ate my computer. Instead of fixing it, I just upgraded to a better PC and WinXP. Since then I've never installed a chat program (although Microsoft makes it very difficult to NOT install Messenger). I don't miss it and I prefer the forums or email to chat.
