The dealer where I bought my 04 F-350 PSD said NOT to remove the muffler as it would cause starting and drivability problems in cold weather. I know a person who has an older 7.3 who removed the muffler and replaced it with straight pipe. So far he has not had any problems and the truck sounds great. Any suggestions other than a 2000.00 exhaust system????
Mine is off... no problems thus far. Although I am not exactly in really cold weather. Check the diesel forums just down the list, you will find many many people are running straight pipe.
I had an '04 F-250 CC 4x4 with the 6.0L and had the muffler removed. The exhaust shop cut the stock system off just before it entered the muffler, then fabricated a y-pipe there and brought 2 3in pipes out the back to exit behind each tire. No noticeable increase in the sound from the driver's seat, unless you had the windows down. You could tell a difference on the outside though....it had a real good sound to it. I had absolutely no problems with the truck after this modification was done. I would've liked to have been able to run 3.5in or 4in pipe out of that y-pipe, but that requires buying pre-bent pipes, as most muffler shops cannot bend anything larger than 3in.
only thing that I don't like about my Straight piped PSD is in the cold when the EBV kicks on its obnoxious as all get out, other than that nothin to complain about.
TAKE IT OFF. In my opinion, you have nothing to lose. I have an 04 6.0 and took it off and love the way it sounds, same noise at idle and lower rpm's, but when you floor it and accelerate it sounds like a big-block v8 with an exhaust (and a turbo whistle).
All you have to do is lossen the clamp behind the catalytic converter, unbolt a few of the hangers, and lower the spare so you have room to wiggle it out.
If you like it, cut off the muffler and put that piece of pipe back and it will dump further back under the bed.
That's what I've been running for the last year and so far it cost me nuthin.
it definitely is a good sound, i was out tonight with a friend of mine, and an 04 PSD passed right by me with a similar setup, i was like wow, thats an awesome sound for a PSD.
Well, being an old guy and not computer freindly I put the wrong thing in the wrong place. Now I haven't found out how to change my user name. Anyway I ordered a stainless steel 4 inch muffler from Magna-Flow that looks like a large straight pipe. Should sound good, I'll let you know.

I have 99 F-250 powerstroke and i am running a 4 inch exhaust going to a 5 inch chrome stack. Every winter i have problems until i drive long enough or hard enough to keep the temp up. I dont know if there is anything i could do short of putting the muffler back on.

like what kind of problems? I wouldn't think the muffler would have anything to do with that.
Anybody run into any problems when going to the dealer for warranty work after having cut the muffler off? Does this pose a threat of having the warranty voided?
Just curious....I was thinking about doing this and don't want to run the risk..
I asked my dealer this past week about puting a straight pipe in place of the muffler on my 6.0 PSD. They said as long as I didn't do anything to the converter my warranty would still be good.
